New Jersey residents want shore rebuilt with strict standards: poll

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Jersey Shore, where hundreds of homes were swept away or damaged in Superstorm Sandy, should be rebuilt, but with new, stricter building codes to protect against future storms, a poll of New Jersey voters said on Tuesday.

If given the choice, voters said the state government in Trenton, rather than local governments, should pay for the recovery, including rebuilding beach front boardwalks, according to the poll by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

While nearly two-thirds said Sandy and other large storms were the result of global climate change, New Jersey voters were divided when asked if the burning of fossil fuels was the main cause of climate change.

"Rebuilding will take a few years, most New Jerseyans agree," said Quinnipiac's Maurice Carroll. "Voters throughout the state think Trenton should help pay to restore the boardwalks and they'd like Trenton, not local communities, to pick up the overall bill."

Seven in 10 New Jersey voters favored rebuilding the Jersey Shore under stricter building codes, including three-quarters of shore residents. Only 18 percent said owners should be allowed to build with no changes to building codes and 9 percent said there should be no rebuilding.

The poll also found enormous support for Republican Governor Chris Christie's handling of the crisis, with more than 95 percent of voters saying Christie did an "excellent" or "good" job.

New Jersey has put a preliminary $29.4 billion price tag on recovery from the October 29 storm that raked the Northeast. Recover in New York was estimated to cost $32.8 billion.

The survey of 1,664 registered voters was conducted from November 19 to November 25, and had a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points.

Sheriff: Man opened fire on 2 Alabama deputies

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (AP) ? The shootout that left one Alabama deputy sheriff dead and another in critical condition on Saturday began when they checked on a man at his mobile home and he opened fire on them, authorities said.

Baldwin County Sheriff Huey Mack told AL.com (http://bit.ly/TcX1yC ) that gunfire erupted Friday after Michael Jansen pulled a handgun on Deputy Scott Ward and his colleagues outside of Jansen's Fairhope-area home.

Ward was fatally wounded after responding about 4 p.m. with two other deputies to a family disturbance call at the residence. Deputies returned fire, killing Jansen.

Ward, 47, was transported by helicopter to University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, where he was pronounced dead. The second deputy remained in critical condition at the same hospital Saturday afternoon. The third deputy was not hurt.

Mack did not release the names of the two surviving deputies.

Jansen, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mack told The Press-Register of Mobile that deputies had responded several times to deal with issues arising from Jansen's mental health. Court records show that his mother moved to have him committed in 2009 and in 2010, and that a probate judge agreed to send him to a state hospital twice in 2010. The newspaper reported that Jansen's mother had called 911 on Friday to report that he was agitated and wouldn't calm down.

A sheriff's office spokesman said Jansen was home alone when deputies went to check on him.

The county's Major Crimes Task Force was investigating the shooting, as was the department's internal affairs office. That is standard procedure when any officer is involved in a shooting.

Mack said the initial inquiry suggests deputies followed procedure.

The sheriff told AL.com that deputies approached Jansen on his porch to find out what prompted the initial call.

"That individual produced a handgun and began to fire at the deputies," Mack said. "Two of the deputies were struck by multiple gunshots."

Mack said the deputies, all of whom were wearing bullet-resistant vests, fired back.

Ward had been a Baldwin County deputy for more than 15 years, working on patrol, in the investigations unit and on the SWAT team. Before joining the Baldwin force, he was an officer for the city of Prichard, near Mobile. He was in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. Mack said he had recently returned from a deployment to Afghanistan. He is survived by his wife.

"Scott stood up ... and he did his job and in the course of the job he made the ultimate sacrifice," Mack said. "Tomorrow we will continue to grieve Scott, but we will have to move on. That's what Scott would want us to do because our mission does not stop."

4 killed during Shiite gathering in Yemeni capital

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Yemeni security officials say that four Shiites were killed when unknown assailants fired a rocket-propelled grenade into a gathering of worshippers observing the holy day of Ashoura.

Officials say the attack took place Saturday in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, near the airport road.

The assailants fired the weapon at a celebration hall where worshippers had gathered, killing four people outside. No further details were immediately available.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Tensions have long existed between extremist Salafis, who are Sunni Muslims, and Shiite tribesmen known as Hawthis who have also at times battled the government. Nearly 200 people died in fighting late last year between Salafis and Hawthis in northern Saada province.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Leonardo Carrilho's long-range strike three minutes from time sparked Rayo Vallecano to a 2-0 home win over Mallorca in the Spanish league on Saturday.

The Brazilian forward broke through for the dominant Rayo with a right-foot blast that slipped just inside the near post.

Leonardo then created a second goal for Andrija Delibasic in the 90th by dribbling past a defender, drawing out the goalkeeper and laying off for the substitute to push the ball into the empty net.

Mallorca's Michael Pereira hit the crossbar in the 60th in the visitors' only clear chance to score.
