Hyatt Hotels 3rd-quarter net income jumps

CHICAGO (AP) ? Hyatt Hotels Corp. said Wednesday its third-quarter earnings jumped 64 percent mostly on comparison to a year-ago quarter weighed down by one-time costs.

Hyatt said per-room revenue in the quarter was strong in North America, but grew less than 1 percent overseas due to a stronger dollar. It's seeing some weakness in group bookings in North America and slowing growth in some international markets.

The company earned $23 million, or 14 cents per share, compared with $14 million, or 8 cents per share, a year ago. Taking out special one-time items, including costs related to a business restructuring, the company said it would have earned $30 million, or 18 cents per share, up 11 percent compared with a year-earlier profit of $27 million, or 16 cents per share.

Revenue rose 9 percent to $977 million.

Analysts polled by FactSet expected a profit of 17 per share on revenue of $1 billion, on average. Analysts tend to strip out one-time items from their estimates.

The company said revenue per available room, an indication of rates, was hurt by the timing of September holidays compared with the same quarter last year. The metric for Hyatt's owned and leased hotels open at least a year rose 4.6 percent in the third quarter.

In morning trading, Hyatt shares slipped $1.61, or 4.2 percent, to $36.45.

Mourdock's comments on rape, pregnancy criticized

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) ? Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said Tuesday when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape, "that's something God intended."

Mourdock, who's been locked in one of the country's most watched Senate races, was asked during the final minutes of a debate with Democratic challenger Rep. Joe Donnelly whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest.

"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen," Mourdock said.

Mourdock became the second GOP Senate candidate to find himself on the defensive over comments about rape and pregnancy. Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin said during a television interview in August that women's bodies have ways of preventing pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape." Since his comment, Akin has repeatedly apologized but has refused to leave his race despite calls to do so by leaders of his own party, from GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on down.

It was not immediately clear what effect Mourdock's comments might have during the final two weeks before the Nov. 6 election. But they could prove problematic. Romney distanced himself from Mourdock on Tuesday night ? a day after a television ad featuring the former Massachusetts governor supporting the GOP Senate candidate began airing in Indiana.

"Gov. Romney disagrees with Richard Mourdock's comments, and they do not reflect his views," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in an email to The Associated Press. Romney aides would not say whether the ad would be pulled and if the Republican presidential nominee would continue to support Mourdock's Senate bid.

Other Republicans did not immediately weigh in. Indiana Republican Party spokesman Pete Seat referred comment to the Mourdock campaign. A spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee and a spokeswoman for Romney did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday night.

National Democrats quickly picked up on Mourdock's statement and used it as an opportunity to paint him as an extreme candidate, calling him a tea party "zealot." DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz described Mourdock's comments as "outrageous and demeaning to woman" and called on Romney to take his pro-Mourdock ad off the air.

Later Tuesday after the debate, Mourdock further explained he did not believe God intended the rape, but that God is the only one who can create life.

"Are you trying to suggest somehow that God preordained rape, no I don't think that," said Mourdock. "Anyone who would suggest that is just sick and twisted. No, that's not even close to what I said."

In response, Donnelly said after the debate in southern Indiana that he doesn't believe "my God, or any God, would intend that to happen.".

Along with Romney's ad, top Republicans have been flocking to Indiana as part of an effort to break open the high-stakes race for the Senate seat, currently held by veteran GOP Sen. Richard Lugar who was defeated by Mourdock in the May primary. Republicans need to gain three seats, or four if President Barack Obama wins re-election, and seats that were predicted to remain or turn Republican have grown uncertain.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell came to Indianapolis for a fundraiser Monday, and Arizona Sen. John McCain and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham campaigned for Mourdock last week. New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte is due in the state Wednesday.

Romney's coattails carry special significance in deeply conservative Indiana, where Mourdock has underperformed Romney by 12 points in most public polls. Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS also has bought another $1 million of airtime in Indiana, making his group the biggest player in Indiana's Senate race. A message left for Crossroads GPS spokesman Nate Hodson was not immediately returned.

Friendships, relationships don't always have to be like Rachel and ...

It?s the inevitable topic that people can?t help but debate: can guys and girls be just friends?

It?s an idea that has been presented through many movies, TV shows and songs that opposite sexes cannot be just friends.

Rachel and Ross from the show ?Friends??end up falling for each other, Ryan Reynolds and Amy Smart end up together in the movie ?Just Friends? and countless other examples all try and prove that relationships start as friendships.

?I don?t understand why some people can?t be just friends. I don?t really get it, sex shouldn?t matter,? junior Michael Rae said.

The Midland native said he has plenty of girl friends that have never came across to him as more than friends.

This has been a common theme for many students. Having friends from the opposite sex is something that senior Taylor Hammerl has personally really enjoyed.

?A lot of my best and closest friends are guys,? Hammerl said. ?We?ve grown up together and seen each other in the best and worst of times.?

The Lake Orion native said she has friends of the opposite sex and they stay in the friend zone because they know too much about each other to even consider a relationship.

This portrayal of knowing someone in movies and TV shows gives people the idea that they should be falling for a friend because they are more understanding of you.

?I think the media gives that hope a friendship can turn into something else, but it doesn?t have to be that way,? senior Scott Mattingly said.

Hammerl said she feels that the media has a tendency to sexualize female and male relations in nearly any situation.

?The media shows that friendships always turn into relationships but it is not impossible to have an opposite sex friend,? Hammerl said.

Mattingly said he knows when he wants to be with friends with someone right away.

?There?s an instant attraction there that doesn?t happen when you?re just friends,? the Hartville, Ohio native said.

Rae said he meets his female friends in church groups, classes and shared music interests.

?When you have things you both like it is easy to be friends and you are just friends so you can offer each other advice. Plus, when it is opposite sex they can give a different insight,? Hammerl said.

Hammerl said it can be fate for friends to turn into more than a friendship but it doesn?t have to always be that way.

Search is on for lost cat at JFK's Terminal 4

10 hrs.

Remember Jack the Cat?

The former stray made headlines and more than 24,000 Facebook friends?last year after escaping from a pet carrier in Terminal 4 at New York?s John F.?Kennedy International?Airport that was bound for an American Airlines flight to California. Two months later, Jack fell through a ceiling panel in a customs area in JFK?s Terminal 8. But by then he was so ill that, despite extensive veterinary care, he was euthanized 12 days later.

Now another cat has escaped at JFK, and the cat lovers at Where is Jack, Inc. --?the non-profit formed to honor?Jack?s legacy -- are concerned that neither the airline involved,?China Airlines,?nor officials at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey?are actively searching for the pet or giving her owners adequate information.?

On Thursday, four-year old Xiaohwa (the cat?s name means "little flower" in Chinese) was being checked in for China Airlines Flight 19 to Taiwan by a friend bringing the cat to its owner. But Xiaohwa bolted when the traveler removed her so security officers could inspect the pet carrier.

"We called Terminal 4 to ask people to look around," a China Airlines employee told NBC News after the passenger reported the cat had escaped. "That's all we could do," the spokesperson said, as the passenger didn't have a picture of the animal.

Xiaohwa has been missing since Thursday. Her owner, Iris Yu, says she?s having a hard time finding out what is being done to find her pet.

?I am so worried and wondering where she is,? Yu told NBC News from her home in Taiwan. ?I have been calling the Port?Authority?and the airline every day trying to ask for details about the search, but they just tell me to wait.? Yu moved to Taiwan 10 months ago and paid $120 for a ticket for the cat to travel with her friend as excess baggage. She spent hundreds of?dollars more for documents, health exams and other travel preparations for the cat.

Yu?s boyfriend, Jerry Cheung, lives in Brooklyn and has also been trying to get information about the cat?s whereabouts.??After the incident we were told it?s the airline?s responsibility but the airline?s phone just kept on ringing with no answer for several days,? he said.

The Port Authority told Cheung it would put out some small animal traps with food and "wait it out."

?This is what they did with Jack and it didn?t work,? said Mary Beth Melchior, founder of Where is Jack, Inc., which has offered the airport help for active searches of lost pets. ?Passive searches for lost cats rarely, if ever, result in finding the animal in a timely manner that allows the animal to remain healthy,? she told NBC News.

Although Xiaohwa has a microchip and has a history of being street savvy, she may have already used several of her nine lives. Yu and Chueng adopted the cat after seeing and feeding her for two years on the streets in their neighborhood. They took her in when she was sick and pregnant and nursed her back to health despite a veterinarian?s suggestion that the animal be euthanized.

In September, the Port Authority approved plans for construction of a $32 animal handling facility at JFK that will handle up to 70,000 domestic and wild animals annually and ?set new national airport standards for comprehensive veterinary, kenneling and quarantine services.?

Meningitis outbreak tops 300 cases

Ten more people have been diagnosed with fungal meningitis in an outbreak linked to tainted steroid injections, health officials reported today.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has increased the tally of cases to 308: 304 cases of fungal meningitis and four cases of joint infections. One of the new cases is in Georgia, the 17th state affected by the outbreak that has killed 23 people.

For a map of cases by state, click here.

The outbreak has been linked to contaminated vials of methylprednisolone acetate, an injectable steroid used to treat back and joint pain. Sealed vials of the steroid, made by the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Mass., contained exserohilum rostratum, a fungus found in soil and plants. It's unclear how the fungus landed in the sealed vials.

The New England Compounding Center has recalled all its products and shut down operations. Calls to the owners were not immediately returned.

As many as 14,000 patients are thought to have received injections of the suspect steroid.

Seventy-six clinics in 23 states that received methylprednisolone acetate from the recalled lots have been instructed to notify all affected patients. The "potentially contaminated injections were given starting May 21, 2012," according to the CDC.

For a full list of clinics receiving the recalled lots of spinal steroid injections, click here.

Meningitis affects the membranous lining of the brain and spinal cord. Early symptoms of fungal meningitis -- including headache, fever, dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light, stiff neck, weakness or numbness, slurred speech and pain, and redness or swelling at the injection site -- can take more than a month to appear.

The longest duration from the time of injection to the onset of symptoms in the current outbreak is 42 days, according to the CDC's Dr. Benjamin Park.

"But we want to emphasize that we don't know what the longest will be," he added, stressing that patients who received injections of the recalled drug should stay attuned to the subtle symptoms "for months."

Fungal meningitis is diagnosed through a spinal tap, which draws cerebrospinal fluid from the spine that can be inspected for signs of the disease. Once detected, it can be treated with high doses of intravenous antifungal medications.

Unlike bacterial meningitis, fungal meningitis is not transmitted from person to person and only people who received the steroid injections are thought to be at risk.

Can't Spell It ? Tips for Choosing which Furniture to Buy

Choosing a Shreveport furniture piece that will best fit the ambiance of your home can turn out a challenging task. With the myriad array of styles available in average stores, narrowing down your choice can really be time-consuming and often overwhelming.

Some homeowners choose to hire professional home designers for the task. This is not always an option for everyone especially for those with limited budget though. Perhaps, these following tips will help you in your dilemma.

Determine beforehand how much you are willing and are able to spend for the furnishings. If you are planning to furnish several rooms, then it will be better if you divide your budget between these rooms. It is important to base your set budget on how many furniture pieces you want to put inside each room. This will help you in narrowing down your search and staying on track while at the store.

Decide what furnishings you exactly want for your home. It will be better if you keep a list of all these. Take into account in which rooms the pieces are to go, whether they will be placed in bedrooms, bathrooms or in the kitchen.

It is important that you also take into account the style of your home when deciding which furnishings to purchase. Picture out what you want your rooms to look like. Consider the layout of the spaces in your home as well, including where permanent fixtures are situated. Sketching where you want certain equipments and items to be placed will help in easing out the decision-making. It may also do you good to take the measurements of each of your room.

Make sure that the items you will be picking out will not only match the style of your home but the present interior colors as well. List down what colors can be found in the rooms which will be receiving the new pieces. Take note of the flooring color, wall color, and if any metal or wood finishes are present. Colors of both the room and the furniture pieces must be complementary to each other.

There are some homeowners who consider taking photos of their rooms. These photos can serve as references for when they actually start going shopping in home improvement stores or depots. The photos may also be shown to salespeople in case one desires to get professional recommendations on what items will best complement the interiors.

It is recommended that buyers do not settle with purchasing the first item they see in the first shop they visit. Canvassing for other furnishings from several shops might widen your choice list but will give you a chance to encounter other items which may be offered in better deals. Make sure that you have shopped around the stores operating within your area before coming down with a decision.

You might also want to employ the use of the internet for finding good offers. This approach is considered by many since they need not exert physical effort going from one place to another, trying to find the item that best fits the image of their home. By simply browsing through websites of furniture shops or auction sites, you will most certainly be able to come down with an item listing.

Before actually buying the Shreveport furniture you want, take the time to inspect its quality. Make sure that is made with solid construction. Check for movements in its frame or snags in its fabric. You might also want to be wary of splits in its wood.

Ancestry.com to be acquired by Permira-led group for $1.6 billion

(Reuters) - U.S. genealogy website operator Ancestry.com agreed to be acquired by a group led by private equity firm Permira in a $1.6 billion deal, four months after it put itself up for sale following the cancellation of a TV show based on its research.

The company, whose website helps users trace their family roots, will be taken private at $32 per share, a 10 percent premium to the stock's Friday closing price of $29.18.

Shares of the company rose to $31.49 in early trading on the Nasdaq on Monday. They have risen 17 percent since June 5, when the company said it is exploring a sale.

The company, which sponsored the U.S. version of the popular British series "Who Do You Think You Are?," suffered a blow in May when NBC decided not to renew the show for a fourth season.

The show, built around tracing celebrities' family histories through Ancestry.com's databases, was a major driver of new subscriber additions for the website.

Ancestry.com, which went public in 2009, has about 2 million paid subscribers.

The Provo, Utah-based company put itself up for sale in June and hired Frank Quattrone's Qatalyst Partners to find buyers.

Ancestry.com received offers in August from three private equity firms, including Permira, but none of the bidders met the company's price expectations at the time.

Sources told Reuters earlier this month that Permira had emerged as the front-runner to buy the company.

INSIDER SUPPORT

The Permira-led buyout group includes the private equity firm's co-investors, members of Ancestry.com's management, including Chief Executive Tim Sullivan and Chief Financial Officer Howard Hochhauser, and Spectrum Equity, which owns about 30 percent of Ancestry.com.

Spectrum Equity declined to comment on the deal.

Sullivan held a 5.2 percent stake, according to an April 11 regulatory filing.

Barclays, Credit Suisse Securities, Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley and RBC Capital Markets have agreed to provide financing for the deal, Ancestry.com said.

The deal is Permira's fourth in the United States in 12 months after Renaissance Learning, Intelligrated and Genesys.

Pet owners unite behind dog treats they claim are causing illness ...

A San Francisco pet owner has joined a national drive urging major chain stores to ban Chinese-made pet treats that campaigners hold responsible for the deaths of hundreds of dogs, a claim the company disputes and federal officials have yet to confirm.

The campaign, started on the online advocacy platform Change.org, is asking top retailers such as Safeway, Wal-Mart, Walgreens and Costco to stop selling Waggin? Train brand white chicken jerky treats, which one San Francisco pet owner says nearly killed her dog.

Dana Moskowitz ? who is among more than 60,000 people Change.org said have signed petitions favoring the ban ? said she witnessed her dog, Bella, almost die of kidney failure after she fed it Waggin? Train jerky she bought at a Safeway store.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said that since early 2011, consumers have reported 2,200 cases of pets that became ill and 361 reports of pets that died after eating the increasingly popular chicken jerky treats.

However, the FDA, which began its investigation into Chinese chicken jerky treats in 2007, has been unable to conclude that the treats were responsible.

The FDA did issue a warning to pet owners ?to stop feeding the jerky pet treat product? if their pets show signs of poor health.

The petition effort was started by Rita Desollar, an Illinois woman who said her dog died a week after eating two pieces of Waggin? Train chicken jerky, Change.org senior campaigner Stephanie Feldstein said.

Keith Shopp, a spokesman for Nestle Purina PetCare Co., said the company has no plans to voluntarily remove its chicken jerky treats from store shelves.

Last month, the FDA reported that U.S. imports of pet food from China had skyrocketed over the past decade, from less than 500,000 pounds in 2001 to 86 million pounds in 2011.

Would you buy a product endorsed by Lance Armstrong?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? It's much easier for consumers to justify continued support of a celebrity or politician disgraced by scandal when they separate moral judgments about a public figure from assessments of their professional performance, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research.

"Distinguishing between morality and performance allows consumers to avoid condoning immoral behavior. This may be one reason that the public discourse around scandals often focuses on the relationship between performance and morality rather than how wrong an action is," write authors Amit Bhattacharjee (Dartmouth College), Jonathan Z. Berman, and Americus Reed II (both Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania).

What do Bill Clinton, Martha Stewart, Tiger Woods, and Roman Polanski have in common? They are all public figures whose reputations have been threatened by scandals attracting relentless media coverage. How do consumers justify buying products endorsed by a celebrity accused of immoral actions or voting for a politician implicated in a scandal?

While some consumers withdraw their support, others may find ways to justify continuing their support either by excusing or justifying the immoral actions in question or separating a judgment of morality about the public figure from an assessment of their performance.

For example, after Tiger Woods admitted to adultery, consumers argued that they don't care for Tiger Woods as a person but still think he is the best golfer in the world and thus will continue to purchase his golf clubs. Instead of arguing that an immoral action is not that severe, consumers prefer to argue that it's not that relevant.

"It may feel wrong to say that immoral actions are acceptable. We don't want to be judged negatively by others for justifying bad behavior. Separating morality from professional standing may be especially appealing, and especially prevalent in public scandals, because it allows us to support an immoral actor without condoning their actions. It's a win-win," the authors conclude.

Protesters break into grounds of Libya's parliament

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - About 500 protesters broke into the grounds of Libya's parliament building on Sunday to demand an end to violence in Bani Walid, a former stronghold of Muammar Gaddafi that is being shelled by militiamen from a rival town.

Militias, many from Misrata and aligned with the Defence Ministry, have been shelling the hilltop town of 70,000 people for several days. State news agency LANA said on Sunday 22 people had been killed and 200 wounded in the fighting.

"We are here to demand the government find a peaceful solution for the tribal war that is happening in Bani Walid," protester Nasser Ehdein said.

Libya's new rulers have led the nation to elections but have struggled to impose their authority on a country awash with weapons a year after Gaddafi was captured and killed.

Underscoring the chaos in the country, there were conflicting reports over the weekend over the fate of Gaddafi's former spokesman and his son.

While Misrata spent weeks under siege by Gaddafi forces in last year's war, Bani Walid was one of the towns that remained loyal to Gaddafi longest. It remains isolated from the rest of Libya and former rebels say it still harbors pockets of support for the old government.

The unarmed group of male and female protesters forced their way past security guards at the gates of the grounds of the parliament buildings in Tripoli, chanting "There is no God but God, and President (Mohammed) Magarief is God's enemy."

Security forces shot rounds into the air as they held their positions at the doors of the building, while elected members of the General National Congress met inside.

Ehdein said most of the protesters were residents of Tripoli who had family in or hailed from Bani Walid.

This is the second time protesters have broken into the grounds of the assembly since it took power in the summer.

The first time was on October 4 when a group of protesters who believed their town was underrepresented in a proposed Libyan government stormed the assembly as it prepared to scrutinize the prime minister-elect's nominations.

ROCKETS

Bani Walid militia leader Abdelkarim Ghomaid said the attacks were continuing in the town, 140 km south of Tripoli.

"The shelling is coming from all sides," he said by phone.

A Bani Walid resident said by phone: "Fighting is continuing today. There is smoke rising over certain parts of the city."

Outside Bani Walid, hundreds of vehicles lined up in the village of Weshtata, 80 km (50 miles) from Tripoli, waiting to be checked by government forces as families fled the fighting.

"We are escaping the danger of the rockets, the shrapnel, and the deaths inside. There hasn't been electricity for days," said one man who had his family in a pick-up truck.

The feud between the towns was inflamed by the death of rebel Omran Shaban after two months in detention in Bani Walid. Shaban, from Misrata, was the man who found Gaddafi hiding in a drain pipe in Sirte on October 20, 2011.

Libya's congress ordered the Defence and Interior Ministries to find those responsible for abducting Shaban and suspected of torturing him. It gave Bani Walid a deadline to hand them over.

Hundreds of families have also fled the fighting in Bani Walid to Tarhouna, some 80 km away, where a statement from the prime minister's office on Saturday said militias had captured former Gaddafi spokesman Moussa Ibrahim.

However, in an audio clip posted on Facebook, a person purporting to be Ibrahim, who held news conferences in Tripoli during the war, dismissed news of his arrest.

There was no independent verification of the authenticity or timing of the Facebook post, dated October 20.

Some officials said Gaddafi's son Khamis had been captured in Bani Walid and died after being taken to Misrata, however there was no official written statement from the government on this, as with previous captures of former regime figures.

On Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Abushagur said on his official Twitter account the announcement of Ibrahim's arrest and Khamis's death was made without confirmation of the news.

Khamis was reported dead on at least three separate occasions during last year's conflict. A Syrian-based television station that supported Gaddafi said he had been killed in fighting southeast of Tripoli on August 29, 2011.

Apple's Oct. 23 'iPad Mini' event: What to expect

5 hrs.

The rumors surrounding Apple's press event, scheduled for Oct. 23, are deafening. Will the Cupertino-based company announce a smaller iPad? (It had better.) Will the company offer up a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display? (Very likely!)?How about an?Apple-branded coffee maker? (No.)

We'll find out for certain which rumors are true?at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET on Tuesday,?when NBC News' tech/sci editor?Wilson Rothman will be inside the event, covering it live here (and tweeting at @wjrothman).?For now, let's?sort?through the latest gossip and making our best guesses. Here's what Apple might announce:

iPad Mini (or is that "iPad Air"?)
We suspect that the smaller iPad will be a 7.85-inch device. This particular size has been floating around for over half a year, since a report in the Wall Street Journal suggested that Apple is testing a device about eight inches in size. Since that time, we've heard various other outlets cite their own anonymous sources in order to back up these measurements and narrow them down to the?7.85-inch point.

Odds are high that the smaller iPad will not have a high-resolution Retina display like the iPhone 5 or the third-generation iPad. A Bloomberg?report suggests?it will use a slightly lower resolution display and be priced to compete with Google's Nexus 7 tablet (and other lower-cost tablets such as those made by Amazon or Barnes & Noble).

According to Apple watcher John Gruber, the smaller iPad may look a lot like a large iPod Touch, rather than any other current Apple device, and have a somewhat smaller bezel. Simple logic suggests that the device will have a Lightning connector, just like the iPhone 5 and the latest iPod touch devices. Rumors regarding the guts of the so-called "iPad Mini"???or "iPad Air,"?as some rumors suggest it will be called???have been scattered and leave us hesitant to hazard many guesses about that aspect of the device.?(Most of the noise is around an A5 processor and 512MB of RAM, for what it's worth ? about the same specs as an iPad 2.)

As far as the price goes though, it's all about educated guesswork.?As our own Wilson Rothman pointed out, $249 would be the magic price tag for this tablet.?"I think that $249 is the 'all other tablets are dead' price, and $299 is the 'Apple keeps its market share?while making a comfortable profit' price. Anywhere over $300 is a "not good" price," Rothman concludes. "Not in today's market, not with a full-sized iPad 2 selling for $400 and a Retina-display iPad selling for $500."

That pricing logic may not win out, however. As 9to5Mac reported, Apple's smaller iPad may be priced at $329, in order to sit somewhere between the $299 iPod Touch and the $399 iPad 2.

13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display
According to multiple reports, both from?purportedly?"reliable sources" cited by 9to5 Mac's Mark Gurman and analysts cited by CNET's Brooke Crothers,?Apple will show off a 13-inch version of the MacBook Pro with Retina display.?This laptop will supposedly be "sold in two configurations, with differing processors and storage, and will be available for purchase soon after introduction," Gurman explains.

A report by the 9to5 Mac staff additionally suggests that the new laptops will start at around $1699. This price tag would belong to the base-model, according to the report, and a higher end version of the laptop would cost about $200 or $300 more.

This new laptop is expected to co-exist with its larger siblings, so don't worry that the current MacBook Pro with Retina display models will disappear from shelves.

A new?new?iPad
The folks at 9to5 Mac call attention to a photo allegedly showing a device which appears identical to the third-generation iPad, except for one small change: It has a Lightning connector instead of a 30-pin connector. One could speculate that the device will see a minor refresh, though it's questionable what sort of other changes might be made, beyond the connector.

Would Apple be crazy enough to refresh the third-generation iPad after just seven months? It would be unprecedented, but not totally outside the realm of possibility.

The other little things
It wouldn't be surprising if Apple were to announce some minor refreshes to its iMac and Mac Mini lines.?According to MacRumor's handy-dandy buyer's guide, both of the product lines are certainly due for some changes.?While the New York Times' David Pogue, citing an Apple exec, did peg a Mac Pro refresh for 2013, there seems to be wiggle room on the?arrival date of a new iMac.

As a French Apple blogger discovered, there's also?a chance that we'll also see some news related to ibooks, Apple's ebook software. After all, there appear to be apps referencing iBooks 3.0 already.

Oh, and let's not forget about the obligatory iTunes update. What would an Apple event be without one of those?

Want more?tech news or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

McGovern an unwavering, often unrequited, liberal ...

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. George McGovern was an unwavering, often unrequited advocate for liberal Democratic causes. He pursued those goals in plainspoken, usually understated, Midwestern style. He was a dedicated, decent man, a devoted Democrat even when the party establishment turned away from him in defeat.

He wasn't good at political gamesmanship. He suffered his worst blunders when he strayed from straight talk in his doomed 1972 presidential campaign. It didn't fit the man and it shook the credibility he treasured.

McGovern was a partisan without the poison that increasingly infected American politics. In his career-long quest for programs to feed the hungry, in the U.S. and worldwide, he worked in partnership with Bob Dole, a former Republican leader of the Senate, where they'd both served.

During his years of political retirement - he lost his South Dakota Senate seat in 1980 - McGovern remained active, lecturing, teaching and writing. He even waged a token presidential campaign in 1984. He'd also run briefly for the 1968 nomination after the assassination of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.

In his 2011 book, "What It Means to Be a Democrat," he summed up his credo:

"Above all, being a Democrat means having compassion for others. ... It means standing up for people who have been kept down ..."

That was the essence of his program during four terms in the House, three in the Senate, and a doomed and crushed presidential campaign in 1972. By the time he was nominated for the White House, McGovern had been marginalized by rivals in his own party, who argued that he was too far left to be elected. That probably was so, but President Richard M. Nixon was the overwhelming favorite against any Democratic challenger.

McGovern got just 37 percent of the vote to Nixon's 61, carrying only Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. Embittered, he considered whether to even stay in politics, especially as other Democrats made him a symbol of what ailed them and kept him off their stages. McGovernite became a label for losers. But he went back to the Senate, and within months he could joke ruefully about his landslide loss.

"I opened the doors of the Democratic Party and 20 million people walked out," McGovern later joked of his reform commission, which had broadened the nominating process, driven out the old party bosses and ultimately made the presidential primaries the arenas for choosing nominees of both parties.

There was nothing strident about McGovern; even when his words were harsh, his delivery tended to be bland. As a young man, he had been a warrior, and a heroic one. As a senator, he opposed U.S. involvement in Vietnam from the beginning, in 1963. Arguing in 1970 for legislation to cut U.S. war spending and force troop withdrawal, he offended his colleagues by telling them, "This chamber reeks of blood," vehement words delivered in the matter-of-fact McGovern style. His 1972 presidential campaign proposals included withdrawal from Vietnam, amnesty for draft evaders and steep cuts in the Pentagon budget.

For a time, he also advocated a $1,000 tax grant to every American to replace complex welfare and income support programs, saying the needy could spend it and the wealthy would pay it back in taxes. It came with no numbers, no estimate of the cost, although McGovern claimed, against arithmetic and logic, that it would balance out at zero. He dropped that idea, but the Republicans never did.

That spoke to one of his chronic political problems. He was an idea man, not a manager. Witness the uncontrolled chaos of his nominating convention, dramatized when assorted Democratic interest groups spent so much time talking that McGovern did not get to deliver his own acceptance speech until 2:48 a.m., long after the TV audience had gone to bed.

But one of his best-remembered, and most unfortunate, lines came later - after his unvetted selection of Sen. Thomas Eagleton of Missouri as his running mate turned into a political disaster with the disclosure that Eagleton twice had undergone electric shock therapy for depression. McGovern said he was "1,000 percent" for Eagleton and wasn't dropping him from the ticket. But he had to. Then he had to shop for a running mate, with five Democrats declining before Sargent Shriver finally said yes.

So if there'd been any doubt about his outcome against Nixon, it was erased before the fall campaign even began. McGovern was frustrated because Nixon stayed at the White House and seldom campaigned at all. McGovern called him the most corrupt president in American history, as The Washington Post published a succession of Watergate disclosures. Nixon just denied it all.

The political pain would ease. More devastating was the death in 1994 of his daughter, Teresa, who had suffered mental illness and alcoholism, and froze to death in a snowbank near a bar where she'd been drinking in Madison, Wis. "You never get over it, I'm sure of that," he said. "You get so you can live with it, that's all." McGovern and his wife Eleanor, who died in 2007, had four daughters and one son.

McGovern wrote a book, "Terry," about his daughter's life struggle, the family impact and his own worry that his political preoccupations had somehow contributed to her troubles. He used the proceeds to open the Teresa McGovern Center in Madison to help others afflicted by addictions.

As a candidate, McGovern had to fend off conservative claims that he was weak on national defense, a naive peacenik - that he had, according to the far right, shirked combat, which was a lie. He was a decorated World War II pilot with 35 combat missions in B-24 bombers.

It could have been a campaign asset, but he talked little about it. He did in a Labor Day speech: "I still remember the day when we were hit so hard over Germany that we were all ready to bail out. So I gave this order to the crew: 'Resume your stations. We're going to bring this plane home.' I say to you and to people everywhere who share our cause: 'Resume your stations. We're going to bring America home.'"

That last line became the standard closing of his campaign speech. But he didn't repeat the details of the mission that won him the Distinguished Flying Cross for safely landing his crippled B-24. Perhaps he should have said more about his service, he said later, "but I always felt kind of foolish talking about my war record - what a hero I was."

That he did not was typical George McGovern.

Holt Farm ? a unique and organic garden : Pro Landscaper

Unique is a word that should rarely be used but in the case of the organic gardens at Holt Farm near Blagdon we can make an exception.

The six-and-a-half acres of contemporary organic gardens tucked away on the shore of Blagdon Lake have earned the description as they are the only ornamental gardens in the country to be certified organic by the Soil Association.

The organic status makes them a pretty special place to visit not just for the keen gardener but for those like me who like to potter with a more luck than judgement approach.

The gardens are just over the garden fence from a family business which started life on the farmhouse table and has grown into the Yeo Valley brand.

Yeo Valley, famous for yogurt, butter and rapping farmers, remains true to its roots and is still very much a family business based in its home village.

The gardens themselves are a labour of love for city girl Sarah who moved to Holt Farm when she married Tim Mead, the man behind Yeo Valley and the son of Roger and Mary Mead who farmed there.

Born and brought up in London and a trained dancer, Sarah has spent the last 18 years learning to garden from scratch and she shares her passion for the garden with her enthusiastic and knowledgeable team.

It's her inspiration that has transformed the much smaller garden she inherited into a personal and contemporary haven much admired by visitors who are fortunate to visit what is effectively the family's back garden.

The team is led by head gardener James Cox who has a background in horticulture and worked at Birmingham Botanic Gardens, Antony House and Highgrove House before moving to the Mendips in 2006.

Since arriving at Holt Farm he has introduced many of the organic systems and is proud of the fact that the gardens operate on a closed circuit organic system with the team limiting what is brought into the garden.

His enthusiasm for compost know no bounds and is happy to demonstrate how to make a good compost to visitors and explain just why it is so important to care for plants and soil.

His knowledge and fervour and that of the team at Holt Farm are passed on to visitors who join the popular garden tours throughout the summer where they hey can share tips and new ideas.

The gardens themselves are now significantly larger than the original farm garden and are laid out to create rooms within rooms and even an old Mini parked at the entrance becomes a flowering attraction.

The vegetable garden produces the organic fruit and vegetables which are used in the tea room while the ornamental gardens are full of colour year round.

Even a glasshouse is used not only to house semi-tropical plants but to bring on seedlings for the garden.

There are meadows that are a riot of colour as well as a more formal garden with a beautiful reflective pool and a cool birch grove with a shady winding path.

Sculptures are dotted round and individual ironwork transforms the gates.

James and his team love to share their knowledge and talk about problems encountered by gardeners everywhere.

Even in this garden the team have a continual battle against the common enemy ? slugs. Just like gardeners everywhere they have tried everything to combat the problem from crushed oyster shells, pelted sheep wool which expands in water and dregs from their local Butcombe Beer.

At the moment the most effective treatment is prevention by using copper rings around the plants and now Yeo Valley Organic Garden designer Eileen O'Donnell jokes that they are waiting for abseiling slugs!

The garden tour ends in the gravel garden with views to Blagdon Lake. From the terrace you can view the garden and at the same time watch geese take off across the lake. It is this garden that James recalls there was real effort in removing soil to get rid of the bindweed.

He said: "One of the greatest challenges is that we have to plan about two or three years ahead if we want to introduce new plants into the garden."

The gardens are open on a limited basis from April to October but you can also enjoy a garden tour with James, which not only gives you a privileged insight into the work that goes on in the garden but includes a cookery demonstration by a guest chef, and on the day I visited that was Paul Collins, who was executive chef at The Grove in Hertfordshire.

The tours include a lunch prepared from the ingredients grown in the garden as well as tasty morning coffee and afternoon tea treats.

Earlier puberty seen in boys, just like in girls

(AP) ? When it comes to the birds and the bees, some parents may want to have that talk with their boys a little sooner than they expected.

Researchers have found signs of puberty in American boys up to two years earlier than previously reported ? age 9 on average for blacks, 10 for whites and Hispanics. Other studies have suggested that girls, too, are entering puberty younger.

Why is this happening? Theories range from higher levels of obesity and inactivity to chemicals in food and water, all of which might interfere with normal hormone production. But those are just theories, and they remain unproven.

Doctors say earlier puberty is not necessarily cause for concern. And some experts question whether the trend is even real.

Dr. William Adelman, an adolescent medicine specialist in the Baltimore area, says the new research is the first to find early, strong physical evidence that boys are maturing earlier. But he added that the study still isn't proof and said it raises a lot of questions.

Earlier research based on 20-year-old national data also suggested a trend toward early puberty in boys, but it was based on less rigorous information. The new study involved testes measurements in more than 4,000 boys. Enlargement of testes is generally the earliest sign of puberty in boys.

The study was published online Saturday in Pediatrics to coincide with the American Academy of Pediatrics' national conference in New Orleans.

Dr. Neerav Desai, an adolescent medicine specialist at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, said he's seen a subtle trend toward slightly earlier puberty in boys. He said it's important for parents and doctors to be aware so they can help children emotionally prepare for the changes that come with puberty.

Doctors generally consider puberty early if it begins before age 8 in girls and before age 9 in boys.

Boys are more likely than girls to have an underlying physical cause for early puberty. But it's likely that most, if not all, of the boys in the study were free of any conditions that might explain the results, said lead author Marcia Herman-Giddens, a researcher at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Problems such as thyroid abnormalities and brain tumors have been linked to early puberty. But boys with chronic medical conditions or who were using medicines that could affect puberty were excluded from the research.

In girls, early puberty has been linked with increased chances for developing breast cancer, but whether it poses health risks for boys is uncertain. Some scientists think early testes development may increase the risk for testicular cancer, but a recent research analysis found no such link.

"If it's true that boys are starting puberty younger, it's not clear that means anything negative or has any implications for long-term," said Adelman, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics' committee on adolescence.

For the new study, researchers recruited pediatricians in 41 states who participate in the academy's office-based research network. Doctors asked parents and boys aged 6 to 16 to take part during regular checkups. The visits took place between 2005 and 2010.

Half of the boys were white. The rest were almost evenly divided among blacks and Hispanics.

On average, white boys started puberty at age 10, a year and a half earlier than what has long been considered the normal average. For black boys, the average age of 9 was about two years earlier than in previous research. Among Hispanics, age 10 was similar to previous research that only involved Mexican-American boys. The new study included boys from other Hispanic backgrounds.

Testes enlargement was seen at age 6 in 9 percent of white boys, almost 20 percent of blacks and 7 percent of Hispanics.

Pubic hair growth, another early sign of puberty, started about a year after testes enlargement in all groups but still earlier than previously thought.

In girls, breast development is the first sign, and recent research suggested that it starts at age 7 in about 10 percent of white girls, 23 percent of blacks and 15 percent of Hispanics. That's substantially higher than rates reported more than a decade ago.

But some experts have questioned methods used in studies in girls, noting that the age when girls start menstruating has not changed much and remains around age 12 on average.

Dr. Dianne Deplewski, a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of Chicago, has not seen any increase in boys referred to her for signs of early puberty. She said it's possible that the new study results were skewed by families who brought their boys to the doctor because they already had concerns about their health.

The study had other limitations. Testes were measured just once, and doctors weren't randomly recruited but volunteered to participate. That means it's possible that those with early maturing patients were overly represented, but Herman-Giddens said it's unlikely boys in the study were different from those in the general U.S. population.

She said the research methods weren't perfect but that they're the best to date. She also stressed that the results shouldn't be used to establish a "new normal" for the start of puberty in boys.

"Just because this is happening doesn't mean this is normal or healthy," the researcher said.
