Google Catalogs for Android and iOS to be mothballed on August 15th

If window shopping through Google Catalogs is your go-to lunch break pastime, you might want to sit down. Mountain View has proclaimed that the service's Android and iOS apps will no longer be supported when August 15th rolls around. Not all is lost, however, as the search giant will keep the digital product tomes alive online. Although Google Catalogs is meeting its end much like Google Reader did, something tells us we won't see replacements for this particular platform cropping up left and right.

Libya PM to reshuffle cabinet amid wave of attacks | Morocco World ...

by Imed Lamloum

TRIPOLI, July 29, 2013 (AFP)

Libya?s premier said Monday he would restore a feared Kadhafi-era security agency and reshuffle the cabinet to help resolve a political crisis and end a wave of violence.

Ali Zeidan said he would reactivate the Internal Security Agency which helped keep the former dictator in power for decades to try to stem a spate of bombings and assassinations, particularly in the east of the country.

?I understand the population?s opposition to this agency that was used by the former regime to repress the people,? he said.

?But without an efficient intelligence body, we cannot stop the attacks,? he said the day after two explosions outside the courthouse in second city Benghazi wounded 43 people, according to the latest health ministry toll.

Zeidan told a news conference in Tripoli that a new defence minister had been chosen and that by Wednesday a new list of ministers would be presented to the country?s highest political authority, the General National Congress.

Libya has not had a defence minister since the removal of Mohammed al-Barghathi from the post in late June.

Zeidan did not name any of the candidates or other portfolios that will be affected by the reshuffle.

But he did say that ?a personality? had been chosen for the defence post.

Meanwhile, the GNC announced on Facebook that it had appointed a new chief of staff on Monday.

Abdessalem Jadallah al-Salihin, who had been an officer in Kadhafi?s special forces but joined the uprising against him in 2011, was named to the post.

In his speech, Zeidan also said specialised teams from Britain and Interpol were expected in Libya soon to help investigate the violence in Benghazi.

On Monday, a car bomb exploded in central Benghazi, a security spokesman told AFP, adding that it had been an attempt to kill a senior naval officer.

?The explosion was caused by a device attached to the car,? Mohamed Hijazi said after reports of a white pickup truck exploding in the city centre and bursting into flames.

?It was an attempted assassination,? Hijazi said, adding that the officer was wounded in the blast.

Clashes between the Libyan army and an armed group near the central town of Sirte killed two people and wounded four others, the news agency LANA reported, without giving further details.

The fighting lasted several hours, LANA said.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Monday expressed concern about the violence.

?Those responsible for violence against the Libyan people, be it shootings or bombings, must be brought to justice to answer for their crimes,? a statement from her office said.

Zeidan said on Friday a ministerial reshuffle would cut the number of cabinet members to create ?greater efficiency?.

He accused the General National Congress of shackling his efforts and stressed: ?I?m an independent. I am not supported by any one party.?

On Saturday and Sunday the offices of political parties in the capital and in Benghazi were vandalised.

Parties targeted included the Muslim Brotherhood?s political wing the Party of Justice and Construction (PJC) and its liberal rival the Alliance of National Forces (NFA).

Amid a spate of incidents in Benghazi, nearly 1,300 inmates escaped during a riot on Saturday in the city?s Al-Kuifiya prison, a security official said. On Friday night, hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Benghazi to condemn the assassination earlier that day of Abdessalem al-Mesmari, an anti-Islamist lawyer who campaigned for a civil state.

Many Libyans blame political rivalries for the problems plaguing a country awash with militias and weaponry left over from the 2011 revolution that toppled Moamer Kadhafi.

?It was a mistake to allow political parties to operate before a constitution was adopted and a law regulating parties was drawn up,? Zeidan admitted on Monday.

?The party with the greatest interest in seeing the country sink into violence and instability is undoubtedly the former regime,? commentator Mohamed Belkheir said.

?Supporters of the former regime have money and are well embedded in the cogs of the state machinery,? he said.

Ashton, who was in Egypt on Monday for talks as Libya?s eastern neighbour was rocked by violence after a July 3 coup, urged Libyans to rally behind Zeidan.

She called on Libyans ?led by the democratically elected government of Mr Zeidan, to ensure the security and stability of the country in the face of those groups who try to undermine the Libyan transition,? her statement said.

?She also encourages the Libyan authorities to proceed as quickly as possible with the process of drafting and adopting a new constitution.?

Bride, best man missing in boat crash on Hudson River; one body found

A boat carrying members of a wedding party struck a barge in the Hudson River Friday night. The boat's operator was charged with first-degree vehicular manslaughter Saturday. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

By Tracy Jarrett, Writer, NBC News

One body has been found in the water after a bride-to-be and a best man went missing when a boat crashed into a barge on the Hudson River on Friday night, officials said, and the boat?s operator has been arrested.

Four other people remained in the hospital Saturday while investigators continued their search, NBC New York reported. The search was suspended at 5 pm local time on Saturday and was set to continue on Sunday morning.

JoJo K. John, 35, has been arrested and will be arraigned in an area hospital on counts including vehicular manslaughter in the first degree, according to Rockland County Undersheriff Robert Van Cura.

A woman's body was discovered adrift and without a life jacket not far south of the bridge, Van Cura said at a press conference on Saturday.?Police will continue searching for a second missing body. The body has not been identified, officials said.

The Coast Guard said six people?were on a 21-foot Stingray near Piermont, N.Y., when it hit the barge at around 10:40 p.m. local time on Friday evening in the vicinity of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

The accident happened shortly after the boat left Piermont for a short trip across the river to Tarrytown, Rockland County Sheriff's Department Chief William Barbera said at a news conference on Saturday morning, according to the Associated Press.

"While the Rockland County Sheriff, N.Y. State Police and U.S. Coast Guard continue to investigate this tragic incident, the New York State Thruway Authority is conducting its own review of safety procedures on the Hudson River as part of the New NY Bridge Project,? said Brian Conybeare, special advisor to the governor, in a statement.

The missing woman, identified by family members as Lindsey Stewart, 30, was to get married on Aug. 10, and the man, identified as Mark Lennon, was supposed to be the best man in the wedding, relatives told NBC New York.

?Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time," Conybeare added.

Groom-to-be?Brian Bond, 36, is among the four injured passengers, who were described as suffering severe injuries, including head trauma and broken bones. Bond is in ?fair? condition at Westchester Medical Center, according to spokesman David Billing.?

Some of those?injured are awake and providing information to investigators. Bond, however, is currently unable to speak due to his injuries, Walter Kosik, the bride?s stepfather told NBC New York.

Police said that while it would have been dark in the area at the time of the crash, the barge was lit up.

"At this point, Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC, has reported to the Thruway Authority that all Coast Guard lighting requirements were met and that the barges were properly lit Friday night. All lighting was checked Saturday morning and is fully operational at all barge locations associated with the project,? Conybeare said in the statement.

Ian Clark calls first NBA contract a 'dream come true'

Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at 10:14pm

Ian Clark sounded groggy and sleep-derived.

Even fatigue couldn?t mask exhilaration.

Wednesday, the former Belmont guard signed a two-year contract with the Utah Jazz. The deal comes just two days after Clark scored 33 points and made seven 3-pointers during an MVP performance for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Summer League championship game.

Clark spent two weeks on two different summer league teams ? the Warriors and Miami Heat. In Orlando earlier in the month, he averaged 16.4 points for the Heat.

?It is overwhelming. It is incredible ? incredible,? Clark said. ?I don?t really have a lot of words for it. It is a dream come true. Guys work their whole lives to get to this point to go play on the biggest stage in the world basketball-wise. For me to be a part of that is great.?

Clark, who went undrafted in June, was unsure of many of the details of the contract. He left negotiations to his agent, Jamar Smiley, of BDA Sports Management.

Clark will head to Salt Lake City, Utah on Monday to meet with coach Tyrone Corbin and general manager Dennis Lindsey. He is guaranteed a spot in training camp in October.

He said the Jazz were not one of eight teams he worked out for before the NBA Draft. But they did express interest before he headed out to Vegas for his second summer league stint. Along with the Jazz, Golden State, Miami and Portland explored the possibility of getting Clark to training camp.

The 6-foot-3 guard from Memphis graduated from Belmont in May as the school?s NCAA era leader in career points and 3-pointers made. He was named the co-OVC player of the year and defensive player of the year in 2012-13. During his career, he led the Bruins to three NCAA Tournaments, four conference championships and three league tournament titles.

?All I wanted was an opportunity,? Clark said. ?That is all I really wanted ? to showcase. I?m just blessed to have this opportunity with Utah and I?m going to make the best of it.?

President Obama's New Best Friends: Senate Republicans

President Obama suggested maybe some House Republicans might want to consider acting more like nice Republican senators in a speech about the economy on Wednesday. The economy is recovering from the Great Recession, he said, if it weren't for Congress. As he put it, a "sizable group of Republican lawmakers" were threatening to not raise the debt ceiling or end the sequester. He continued:

A growing number of Republican Senators are trying to get things done, like an immigration bill that economists say will boost our economy by more than a trillion dollars.? But a faction of Republicans in the House won?t even give that bill a vote, and gutted a farm bill that America?s farmers and most vulnerable children depend on.?

If you ask some of these Republicans about their economic agenda, or how they?d strengthen the middle class, they?ll shift the topic to ?out-of-control? government spending ? despite the fact that we have cut the deficit by nearly half as a share of the economy since I took office.

White House aides had told reporters that the speech was not intended to outline new policy proposals, but to set up the debate before he fights Republicans over the debt ceiling and the budget this fall. Hours before Obama gave his speech, Politico's Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen reported how the Obama administration had won over the formerly "grumpy" Sen. John McCain. The new "power triangle," Politico says, is McCain, Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, and White House chief of staff? Denis McDonough. Politico reports that "This new alliance... is in preliminary conversations to avert a government shutdown over the budget," Politico says. "The real test," McCain says, "will be this fall."

RELATED: Obama Builds Extra $20 Billion 'Cushion' Into Funding of Jobs Bill

This new alliance appears to be the result of Obama's much-publicized dinner diplomacy kicked off this spring. (McDonough is referred to as someone?"who actually cares what senators say and think and do.") On Wednesday, Obama said, "With an endless parade of distractions, political posturing and phony scandals, Washington has taken its eye off the ball. And I am here to say this needs to stop." Notably, McCain was at the center of one of those "phony scandals" ? Benghazi. It seems he has stopped.?

RELATED: Trumpdate: How Did Obama Ever Get into the Ivy League?

Not all Republican senators see things like McCain does.?Sens. Mike Lee and Marco Rubio say Republicans should shut down the government unless Obama agrees to defund Obamacare. Sen. Pat Toomey criticized House Republicans for giving in on the debt ceiling earlier this year. Sen. Ted Cruz criticized McCain's suggestion that Republicans trust the House GOP to negotiate a debt ceiling increase with the budget, saying, "The senior senator from Arizona urged this body to trust the Republicans. Let me be clear: I don?t trust the Republicans, and I don?t trust the Democrats."

RELATED: Poll: A Slight Majority Still Blames George Bush for Economy

But Obama suggested his support among Republicans is bigger than it looks, "The fact is, there are Republicans in Congress right now who privately agree with me on many of the ideas I?ll be proposing, but worry they?ll face swift political retaliation for saying so," the president said. He challenged Republicans to offer their own programs to grow jobs. Those ideas are needed.?Fed chair Ben Bernanke said last week that Congress is hurting the economy. And the recovery Obama touted? As The Washington Post's Dylan Matthews explains, while the unemployment rate has dropped since the peak of the recession, that's almost entirely do to people leaving the workforce by, say, retiring.

MakerBot's contest winners print a better birdhouse

Image

Like The Longines Symphonette before it, Thingiverse's army of 3D printing enthusiasts don't rest, so when MakerBot put them to the task of building a better home for wayward birds, they naturally jumped into action. Not to put too fine a point on it, but while we're still a ways from indoor plumbing and the like, the American Craftsman Bungalow is surely the sort of thing any upwardly mobile winged friend would want to call home. The first place winner gets (fittingly) an Eggbot, some PLA filament, display space at the MakerBot NY store and the admiration of birds everywhere. And if Hitchcock has taught us anything, it's that you want those buggers on your side. You can download the schematics for all of the winners in the source link below, complete with the standard whistles and bells.

Swell Radio (for iPhone)

The recently released Swell Radio is unofficially billed as "Pandora for radio," and after using it for several hours, I understand why. The free iPhone?app lets users stream news, comedy, sports, and business content to their Apple iPhones?content that adapts to your listening habits to create a customized experience. Fans of news, podcasts, and talk radio should consider giving Swell Radio a download.

Tuning In
Unlike Stitcher Radio (an app that provides a similar service), Swell Radio doesn't require you to create an account?you can jump right in. Swell Radio sports a simple but elegant interface that's remarkably clutter-free. Swell Radio utilizes "audio cards," rectangular panels that contain important information such as the show/station/podcast's name, runtime, and the broadcast date. There are also two icons that let you rewind a track in 10-second intervals or fast-forward in 30-second intervals. Tapping the small information icon flips the audio card where you can find a show synopsis and a link to the show's homepage.

NPR, Comedy Central Stand Up, and BBC Documentaries are just a handful of the many stations available. The audio streamed to my Sony MDR headphones was crisp and clear; in fact, Swell Radio sounded better than many terrestrial radio stations, as there were no pops or hisses. If you dig into the settings, you can find an option to for "high-quality streaming" that's designed to improve audio (when a show offers it).

Listening In
Brining a finger to the Swell logo opens a genre listing that includes technology, business, arts, TV& film, culture, music, comedy, and other categories. Selecting music took me from the informative Freakonomics show to a program that featured several indie artists. Switching categories causes Swell Radio to play a handful of the new genre tracks, before reverting to the normal mixed-content stream. Unlike Stitcher Radio you cannot ban or favorite shows.

Note: Swell Radio doesn't let you continuously listen to one topic or genre, as some other music streaming apps do. For example, if I fired up Slacker Radio's '80s station, I'd be fed nothing but tunes from the decade of decadence. Swell Radio, on the other hand, streams a variety of topics that are constantly tweaked based on several criteria. Swell Radio also doesn't offer live radio, which is SiriusXM Radio's bread and butter. Instead, it has timely recorded programming; I listed to Grantland's Jalen Rose Report podcast just hours just a few hours after it went live.

Like Slacker Radio and many other audio streaming services, Swell Radio constantly tweaks the listening experience based on your actions?it's not a traditional podcast. The app knows what you like based on how long you listened to a particular genre, when you skipped a program, the "wisdom of the Swell community," data from your Twitter stream (if you follow lots of sports teams, Swell Radio serves up more sports content), time of day, and the time since last fired up the app. You can also share content via Facebook, Twitter, and email. Swiping up on an audio card bookmarks a track, so that you can return to it at a later time.

Radio Days
There is a sea of iPhone apps designed to stream music, but very few have a laser-beam focus on news and talk. Swell Radio is impressive, but not strictly because of the novel idea; it's an app that iPhone users should download if they dig non-music radio and podcasts. Should developer Concept.io allow users to continuously stream their genres of choice (a feature that Stitcher Radio offers), this already impressive app will be that much better.

Ubuntu Edge smartphone announced for Indiegogo, coming to market in May 2014

Ubuntu's smartphone strategy is taking shape today in form of the Edge, which is set to come to market in May of next year, when it'll be available for $830 outright. True to Canonical's community driven roots, the company is turning to crowd-funding to get the device on its feet; to that end, it's launching a campaign on Indiegogo today, which provides early backers the opportunity to snag the phone for $600. According to company founder, Mark Shuttleworth, the Indiegogo strategy isn't meant to compete with its strategy of courting carriers, but rather, it's meant to solve an "innovation gap" that's arisen during its talks with manufacturers.

Key to the Ubuntu Edge is the aim to bridge the cap between mobile phones and PCs. To accomplish that, the Edge will be designed to run a full-fledged Ubuntu desktop operating system alongside Android. While specs are currently tentative, the company is aiming to outfit the Edge with a quad-core CPU, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

California residents busted with 10 pounds of meth

BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Two California residents are jailed with bond set at $2 million each after Ada County deputies found 10 pounds of methamphetamine in their car.

Ada County officials say 24-year-old Oscar Gutierrez-Chavez and 19-year-old Areli Mejia are charged with trafficking. Their preliminary hearings are set for Aug. 3.

Prosecutors say narcotics investigators began the case in early July and agreed to buy 10 pounds of the drug at $12,000 a pound.

Court records say the pair picked up the drugs in Northern California and drove them to Boise.

Undercover officers met with Gutierrez-Chavez and Meja in Boise on July 18 and found the meth hidden in their car. The car and $800 in cash also were seized.

In June, deputies arrested a Southern California man in Boise and seized nearly 12 pounds of meth.

An army family is ?whole again? after father's surpise return home

Specialist Neftali Gonzalez may be an American hero, but to a little boy, he?s just dad.

?It?s a good day for me to come back and see my family,? said Gonzalez.

Gonzalez returned home a few days ago to Worcester, Massachusetts, from a ten-month tour of duty in Afghanistan. He decided to surprise his son Jayden at daycare.

His son has been waiting for this day ever since his dad deployed.

?Every day he asked for daddy. Now daddy?s home,? said Gonzalez?s wife, Alaina.

When he learned of his return date, Gonzalez and his wife wanted to make it something special for the children.

?It?s been a long, hard ten months and I wanted them to remember the end of it good. Surprising them, they?ll never forget this situation and how they feel when he walked through the door,? said Alaina.

Gonzalez surprised his daughters earlier in the day.

?I was really shocked. I just stood there like, oh my God. I didn?t know what to do,? said one of his daughters, Alexus.

?It was great. It was great to see all their faces. They were shocked. You?d thought they saw a ghost,? said Gonzalez.

Now, after almost a year of only being able to text or video chat a family is reunited.

?We are whole again, we are complete,? said Alaina.

NFL, players union talking about HGH tests again

The NFL and players union are talking again about getting a test in place for human growth hormone as early as the upcoming season.

An email obtained by The Associated Press from the NFL Players Association indicates that the league and the NFLPA have jointly hired a doctor to conduct a study on NFL players to determine a good threshold for a positive HGH test. The email was sent by the union to players, in part to explain that the study requires them to have blood drawn during their physical when training camp begins. The email said the blood samples will only be used for the study.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the discussions are focused "on a full resolution of any remaining issues, including the role of a population study."

The labor agreement that ended the NFL lockout in 2011 requires the league gain union approval before testing players for HGH. The union says it favors testing, but has reservations about the appeals process.

The union also has reservations about the way discipline will be handed out, and wants to collectively bargain that issue.

Supplemental HGH is a banned substance that is hard to detect and used by athletes for what are believed to be a variety of benefits, whether real or only perceived ? such as increasing speed and improving vision.

Among the health problems connected to HGH are diabetes, cardiac dysfunction and arthritis.

In the union's email, it told the players that Dr. Alan Rogol has been jointly hired by the NFLPA and NFL to oversee the study and supervise two jointly retained biostatisticians. One of those biostatisticians, Donald Berry, will design the study protocol and conduct the analysis. The second will independently review both the protocol and the analysis.

In January, Major League Baseball and the players agreed to HGH blood testing throughout the regular season and to have a World Anti-Doping Agency laboratory in Canada keep records of each player.

Ghosts beat minions as 'Conjuring' horror flick leads box office

By Chris Michaud and Lisa Richwine

NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "The Conjuring," a low-budget horror movie about a haunted farmhouse, spooked two pricey competitors and the "Despicable Me" minions to win a crowded weekend box office contest at U.S. and Canadian theaters.

"Conjuring" soared past forecasts with $41.5 million in domestic ticket sales in its first three days, the highest take among four new films, according to studio estimates. The strong performance from "Conjuring" knocked two-time champion "Despicable Me 2" to second place with $25.1 million.

Both movies topped the weak results for big-budget entries "Turbo" and "R.I.P.D.," which both fell short of already low expectations from some box office analysts.

Animated film "Turbo," the story of a racing snail, landed in the No. 3 slot with $21.5 million from Friday through Sunday. Sci-fi comedy "R.I.P.D." floundered in seventh with $12.8 million.

"The Conjuring," produced for just under $20 million, stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as a couple who investigate paranormal activity inside a Rhode Island farmhouse. The movie followed the successful path of other inexpensive horror films such as "Mama" and "The Purge" that grabbed big sales in their opening weekends this year.

"It so overperformed anybody's wildest expectations," said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros' executive vice president for domestic distribution. "We originally thought if we open in the mid-20s, that's a strong result and we'd be very happy with that."

Family audiences kept coming for the animated "Despicable 2," one of the summer's biggest hits, which brought its global total through Sunday to $585 million, distributor Universal Pictures said. The film features the voice of Steve Carell as Gru, leader of the singing-and-dancing yellow minions.

Continued interest in "Despicable" stalled the debut of "Turbo," which features the voice of Ryan Reynolds as a snail that acquires super-fast powers after a freak accident.

The movie, produced by "Shrek" creator DreamWorks Animation, turned in one of the studio's lowest recent debuts. Its Friday-to-Sunday sales came in below last year's box office disappointment, the holiday-themed "Rise of the Guardians."

With a head start on the weekend, "Turbo" added $9.7 million on Wednesday and Thursday at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters, plus $22.6 million from international openings, which only covered about one-quarter of all international markets. DreamWorks spent roughly $135 million to make the film.

"We're in a very competitive marketplace but we have a ton of summer play time left, so we'll see," said Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution for 20th Century Fox, the studio that released "Turbo," speaking to the film's opening numbers and its prospects.

Aronson said "Turbo" had "very strong openings" internationally, and an A-plus Cinemascore rating from moviegoers under age 25, which he said "bodes very well for its playability," or future box office prospects.

"R.I.P.D." was nearly as expensive as "Turbo," costing Universal Pictures about $130 million. The movie features "Turbo" star Reynolds and Jeff Bridges as lawmen in the "Rest in Peace Department" who come back from the dead to fight crime.

"R.I.P.D." added $6.8 million in international markets for a global total of $19.6 million through Sunday.

"In this crowded marketplace, R.I.P.D. did not find the size audience it needed and Universal is disappointed in the weekend result," said Nikki Rocco, president for domestic distribution at Universal Pictures.

Rocco said it was offset by "a fabulous year for Universal," which has now hit $1 billion at the box office for the year thus far, the earliest date the studio has ever reached that level.

Rounding out the top of the charts, the Adam Sandler comedy "Grown Ups 2" took the No. 4 slot, pulling in $20 million during its second weekend.

Newcomer "Red 2," an action comedy aimed at older adults, landed in fifth place with 18.5 million, which studio officials said was in line with their expectations. The film stars Bruce Willis as a retired CIA agent who reunites a group of operatives to track down a missing nuclear device.

"The Conjuring" was released by Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc. "Red 2" was released by Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp, distributed "Despicable Me 2" and "R.I.P.D." Sony Corp's movie studio released "Grown Ups 2."

Spitzer submits signatures for NYC ballot

NEW YORK (AP) ? Eliot Spitzer has met the deadline to file thousands of petition signatures for his bid to revive his political career by running for New York City comptroller.

Spitzer said that "over 27,000 signatures" were submitted to the city Board of Elections just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday, ahead of a midnight deadline. It came just four days after the tarnished ex-governor launched his campaign.

Spitzer needs 3,750 valid petition signatures to get on the Democratic primary ballot for September.

"I just want to first and foremost thank the citizens of New York that signed these petitions," Spitzer said outside the Board of Elections office in lower Manhattan. "I want to say it's an important statement for those who said it was not possible in the course of three and a half days to gather these signatures to get a candidate on the ballot for citywide office."

The filing may not be the last word. Spitzer's opponents or others could challenge signatures for reasons such as incomplete addresses or missing dates.

If that happens, elections officials will have to review the objections, hold a hearing late this month and decide whether the signatures qualify. The matter could ultimately go to court.

Spitzer, who resigned amid a prostitution scandal in 2008, startled the political establishment and shook up what had been a tame comptroller's race by jumping into it, a decision he says he just made over the weekend.

Candidates were allowed to start petitioning in early June, and many did. Campaigns generally gather two to three times as many signatures as needed, in case some are challenged as having incomplete addresses, missing dates or other flaws.

Spitzer had said he was aiming for 7,500 signatures. His self-financed campaign has offered canvassers $12 an hour to collect them; consulting firm BrownMillerGroup said a report that petitioners were getting $800 a day was inaccurate.

Stringer, meanwhile, noted that he relied on volunteer petitioners.

"One hundred thousand people signed my petition, and we didn't have to pay anybody," he said Thursday evening on TV news station NY 1's "Road to City Hall."

Spitzer and Stringer each need signers who are registered Democrats, live in the city and haven't signed another comptroller hopeful's petition. Signers must supply their names and addresses and date the forms, and signature-gatherers also have to fill out certain information.

Spitzer's four-day timeframe was certainly a challenge, political veterans said.

"It's not a lot of time. It can be done," said Martin Connor, an election lawyer and former state senator.

Meanwhile, Spitzer got encouraging news Wednesday from a poll showing he topped Stringer 42 percent to 33 percent among registered Democrats, including those leaning toward but not settled on a candidate. The Wall Street Journal-NBC 4 New York-Marist questioned 546 registered Democrats and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points for questions limited to them.

Spitzer said Wednesday night that while the poll numbers were comforting, he was aware he had more work to do.

"I'm never confident," he said. "And that is defensive politics."

Stringer campaign manager Sascha Owen expressed confidence that as more voters get to know Stringer, "he will be the obvious choice for comptroller."

Other comptroller contenders include Republican John Burnett, who has worked on Wall Street; his campaign said Thursday he'd filed about 8,000 signatures.

Petitions weren't yet due for some third-party contenders, but Libertarian Kristin Davis' campaign has collected 3,100 so far, spokesman Andrew Miller said. Adding an unusual element to the campaign, Davis is a former madam.

Green Party candidate and former teacher Julia Willebrand's campaign didn't immediately respond to a message sent through the campaign's Facebook page Thursday evening.

NBC.com lists Spitzer as a guest on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" Friday night. The show airs at 11:35 p.m. EST.

Why The GOP Will Control Washington in 2017

Why The GOP Will Control Washington in 2017

Megan McArdle makes a good case. Obviously, it could be turn out wrong because of the annoying tendency of events to get in the way. But I do agree with her that the GOP presidential advantage going in 2016 is wildly underappreciated. ?If anything, I think she downplays what a flawed candidate Hillary Clinton is. But there?s plenty of time to get into that down the road.?

iPad Apps of the Week: Guide, WunderMap, and More

The iPad offerings were all over the place, jumping from intensive weather details to a news-reading puppy to enough emoji to ensure that you never have to use words for feelings ever again. But then again, that?s what life is all about, after all?anthropomorphised dogs and avoiding face-to-face human interactions at all costs. Or something like that.

iPad Apps of the Week: Guide, WunderMap, and More

WunderMap: The Weather Underground, the very first online weather service (we think) has finally come to iPad. You?ll get everything you?ve come to love about the service including viewing weather station webcams and get down to as many levels of detail as you want by choosing various map layers for satellite, radar, and weather station readings. [Free]

iPad Apps of the Week: Guide, WunderMap, and More

GroupMe: GroupMe?s a lifechanger. You should use it. This week it got emoji (good) that for some insane reason use its logo in place of a human head, and then attach things like beards and devil horns and headphones to it (uhh). The emoji update is just on iOS (iPhone and iPad), but will be on Android and Windows Phone 8 ?soon?. [Free]

iPad Apps of the Week: Guide, WunderMap, and More

Guide: A news app for the reading disinclined, Guide is essentially an RSS that talks to you. You choose which topics pique your interest, and the app then takes you to news pieces you might find interesting. At that point, though, is when an adorable virtual puppy takes over and reads until he can?t read no more (or until you tell it to stop). You can even add your own sources that the app might not already have pre-loaded. At the very least, it?s a fun way of staying up-to-date when your eyes have to be busy elsewhere. [Free]

Mac Haik Realty to move forward on next Energy Corridor tower

Courtesy Mac Haik

Mac Haik Realty is moving forward with the development of the Energy Tower IV, a speculative, Class A office building in the Energy Corridor.

Mac Haik Realty said Thursday it is moving forward with the development of the Energy Tower IV, a speculative, Class A office building in the Energy Corridor.

The 17-story, 450,000-square-foot tower will be identical to the Energy Towers II and III at Kirkwood and Interstate 10.

Energy Tower IV is scheduled to break ground in August with occupancy slated for late 2014.

Energy Tower III topped out last week, and Houston-based Technip USA Inc. ? which leased the entire tower in April ? is expected to move in by the end of January, said Steve Bryant, director of leasing. Energy Towers I, II and III are all 100 percent leased.

MHR is using the same team that was assembled to develop the other three office buildings to develop the tower in Energy Plaza. The team consists of Houston-based Morris Architects, Sugar Land-based E.E. Reed as general contractor and the Houston office of Day, Brown, Rice providing the engineering component. Professional Construction Services' Houston office will provide interior construction services, and Mac Haik Realty will provide project management services as well as property management services.

Bryant and Senior Vice President Brandon Poynter will handle the leasing of Energy Tower IV.

Google Brings Street View To Backpackers - Business Insider

Google Trekker

Google/Youtube

Google Trekker in the canals of Venice.

?

Google is running a new pilot program for Trekker, a wearable backpack camera system designed to extend the reach of Google Maps to places where Street View cars, bicycles and snowmobiles can't go.?

Google has built Trekker to fit in narrow spaces, and last October it sent two Trekker teams to map the Grand Canyon, according to NPR.?

'The Trekker is operated by an Android device and consists of 15 lenses angled in a different direction so the images can be stitched together into 360-degree panoramic views," Google explains on its web site.?

However, Trekker isn't light: It weighs about 40 lbs due to all the batteries and sophisticated tech that's built in.?

Google says it's looking for people affiliated with tourism boards, non-profits, government agencies, universities and research groups to borrow and wear Trekker on upcoming trips.?

Google says it'll also consider individuals, but judging from the questions it's asking in the application, people are going to have to meet a high bar to get chosen. Here's one example:?

Provide some detail about your proposed project, the location you want to share with the world via Street View, and why you think it?d be useful. Tell us what makes this place amazing, describe the type of imagery and any highlights you expect to capture, and let us know if your trip is already planned (if so, when?).

Google will probably get tons of people applying to wear Trekker on their next trip. But there are a couple of potential problems they could run into.?

For example, Street View cars haven't been warmly received in certain parts of the world, particularly in Europe. Google is making no effort to mask what Trekker is doing, and says?"proudly features the Google Maps logo."

Second, some US businesses have already banned Google Glass, the wearable computing system. How are people (in the US and elsewhere) going to react when they see Trekker, which is much more noticeable??

Here's Google's promo video for Trekker:?

GALEX decommissioned: What happens to abandoned space probes?

NASA's earth-orbiting GALEX was shut down Friday, meaning that the spacecraft will join a long line of space probes sacrificed to the universe.

By Elizabeth Barber,?Contributor / July 1, 2013

This NASA Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) mosaic of ultraviolet images obtained from December 2003 shows the large galaxy in Andromeda, Messier 31.

The pink slip was delivered at 3:09 p.m. EDT on Friday in Dulles, Vermont. The order: decommission Galaxy Evolution Explorer.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

And so, after about a decade of use, the power was flicked off on GALEX.

The Earth-orbiting spacecraft ? which had been cut from NASA?s budget in February 2011 and had survived off funds from the California Institute of Technology ? had racked up a sizable roster of discoveries?during its mission, observing the teenage-stage of galaxy growth, a black hole consuming a star, the presence of new stars around dead galaxies, and?insights into the nature of dark energy.

The spacecraft will remain in orbit for at least another 65 years, floating glumly and uselessly around the Earth. Then it will fall back toward the planet, burning up as it re-enters the atmosphere, doing one last service as a ?shooting star? on which a celestial-looking child might make a wish ? just as writer Ray Bradbury, in his 1951 story Kaleidoscope, imagined an unlucky, falling astronaut as the object on which a small Illinois boy pins all his hopes.?

GALEX?s sad, lonely end is typical. Few objects launched into space have hope of seeing Earth again. Unless, of course, there are people on board, that brave object is designed not to come back to us, but to serve its mission and then remain out there as a teeny record of human ingenuity and curiosity floating through an impassive universe.

Some of these explorers, like GALEX, will meet a sudden end. Our space record is packed with casualties ? spacecraft that made fatal landings and the dust of which has been received neatly into the universe. There was Russia?s Venera 3, a Venus-bound probe that crashed into the planet in 1966. And there?s the US?s Mars Climate Orbiter, which in 1998 made a faulty entry into the planet?s orbit and fizzled up in the unfriendly atmosphere.

But for other spacecraft, the end is more uncertain, more a long wait for something, anything, to happen. Other Venera probes (Russia launched some 16 of them) are presumably still somewhere on Venus, their batteries shot. And on Mars, NASA's Spirit Rover stopped communicating in 2010; since then it has lingered hopelessly there in the Martian desert. Opportunity, its twin rover, is still chugging along, sending back new information as it waits for something to go wrong. ?Every day is a gift,? said John Callas, of NASA?s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, of that rover, earlier this month.

Curiosity rover ? which landed on Mars last summer ? has a mission of one Mars year, or some 687 Earth days. Perhaps it will outlast its warranty. But eventually it will join the other decommissioned, powerless rovers on the Red Planet, waiting dully for something to happen to it, ever so slowly eroding and gathering Martian dust.

Perhaps the loneliest of ends is reserved for the most far-flung objects, which quietly, without complaint, recede into the universe.

In Bradbury?s Kaleidoscope, a spacecraft splinters midflight and sends its human cargo floating through the terrible emptiness, waiting for something that will put an end to it all. And so they fall with ?vague acceptance,? with ?varying degrees of terror and resignation,? with the knowledge that ?nothing could bring them back.?

The falling astronauts in that story enjoy the benefit of a reasonably short lifespan. But for the (mercifully non-sentient) space probes, the wait is much longer, possibly forever.

Voyager 1, which is now at the outskirts of our solar system and preparing to depart for the rest of our galaxy, and Voyager 2 will run out of fuel in about 2020. After that, the siblings will drift through space, waiting, "each going to a separate and irrevocable fate."

How would you change Parrot Zik by Starck?

Parrot Zik by Starck review: Is $400 worth it for the fanciest, techiest headphones around?

It's rare that How Would You Change takes a look at headphones, but we think this pair deserves the scrutiny. Parrot Zik by Starck is a $400 pair of Bluetooth cans with NFC, capacitive touch panels, active noise cancellation, head detection and a jawbone sensor for speech. Two of our reviewers put the headset through its paces and found that, sadly, a short battery life, wonky Bluetooth performance and so-so sound quality meant the set wasn't worth the $400 asking price. But what about you? Did you splash out the big bucks on these, and if so, how have you found 'em?

If You Must Wear Your Tech, Try Not To Look Like An Idiot

Sarah-Jessica-Parker-Google-GlassLike Dance Moms or protein-only diets, wearable tech is one of those things that simultaneously incites excitement, bandwagonning, distrust and disgust. Gut instinct tells us we're turning into cyborgs, which is either terrifying or great, depending on how you see it. Maybe we will become more efficient, fit versions of ourselves, or maybe we are simply setting ourselves up for the government to steal a new wealth of personal information. As Sarah wrote, the future of wearable tech is nearly impossible to predict, even for those most involved in its development. These are big concerns. But I have another one: that your wearable tech is making you look like a tool.
