Twin Cities small businesses weathering harsh flu season ...

Flu season can be bad for business -- especially small business.

With relatively few employees on their payrolls to begin with, small businesses can have trouble dealing with having just one person call in sick.

"You can't have extra manpower just sitting around waiting for someone to be sick," said Jim Schreier, owner of Charles Cabinet Co. in Roseville. "So, when someone is out, you definitely feel the pain."

Although the pace of new influenza infections in Minnesota appears to have slowed recently, Doug Schultz, a spokesman for the Minnesota Department of Health, said the flu season is far from over.

"We're still at a pretty high level of (flu) activity," Schultz said. "There's just way more flu out there this year than there was last year."

Schreier knows this first-hand. This has been the worst flu season he has seen, in terms of lost production, since he bought Charles Cabinet from his father 21 years ago.

About two weeks ago, four of his eight employees were out sick at the same time, leaving him and the remaining four to juggle both the manufacturing and customer service sides of the custom cabinet company.

Although his employees are trained in multiple aspects of the business, it's impossible to produce the same number of cabinets with half the employees, Schreier said. He added that the difference often has to be made up with overtime, which gets expensive.

The company, which usually manufactures between two and three sets of

cabinets a week, turned out just one set that week.

At the Northeast Tailor Shop in Minneapolis, a single case of the flu can stop work entirely -- because there's only one employee: owner Altug Ipekci. Ipekci hasn't been sick yet this season, but pneumonia laid him up for three days over Christmas 2011.

Ipekci said he put up a sign saying the shop was closed, but he still tried to keep up with orders despite his illness.

"I don't like to sit around and baby myself," Ipekci said. And since it's just him at the shop, he doesn't have to worry about infecting anyone else when he's sick.

Schreier, on the other hand, tells his employees to stay home if they feel ill to avoid infecting coworkers, despite being understaffed.

For restaurant owners, the risks are maximized.

John Tinucci, co-owner of the two Colossal Cafes in Minneapolis and St. Paul, said he makes it clear to his roughly 25 employees that he doesn't want them at work if they even have symptoms.

"You get some of these young kids -- they need the money," Tinucci said. "They don't always understand that it's a problem for the other employees or (the customers)."

Although a couple of his employees have been out sick at one time or another this flu

season, Tinucci said he hasn't seen the kind staffing problems Schreier has.

Nim Traeger, vice president of risk control at Travelers Cos., said Schreier and Tinucci are doing the right thing by encouraging their employees to stay home if they get sick. Traeger emphasized that the best way to beat the flu is to prevent it from spreading in the first place.

Obvious steps, such as providing employees with hand sanitizer and encouraging them to receive flu shots, should be combined with additional measures like frequently wiping down common surfaces with disinfectant, she said.

Tinucci said compulsory cleaning in the restaurant business becomes second-nature.

"You clean as you work," Tinucci said. "That's kind of a restaurant mantra."

Schreier targets door handles, railings and telephone handsets, scrubbing them regularly between weekly top-to-bottom cleanings of his shop. He also places bottles of hand sanitizer throughout the building.

Despite his efforts, Schreier said the severity of this flu season took him by surprise.

"We haven't had anything like this before," he said. "I've tried to think about it, but I don't know what I could've done different."

Minimally invasive islet transplantation for patients with type 1 diabetes achieves insulin independence and reverses the progression of atherosclerosis in the first few years after transplant, according to a University of Illinois at Chicago study. The research is published in the February issue of the journal Diabetes Care and is available online. Patients with diabetes, particularly women, have a substantial increased risk of dying from ischemic heart disease, according to previous research. SADTU Political Education Blog: History, Culture and Schooling

Ancient classroom at Sumer History, Culture and Schooling Professor Michael Cole?s long essay ?Cross?Cultural and Historical Perspectives on the Developmental Consequences of Education? has been divided for the CU?s purposes into three parts. It begins by asking fundamental questions about the place of schooling in society, the nature of education, and whether schooling and education are ever, or could ever be, the same thing. Mike Cole undertakes to ?venture into a brief synopsis of historical variations in the ways that adults organize the lives of the young so that they acquire knowledge and skills deemed essential to communal life.?

Early in the essay, Cole writes: ?It was widely assumed [?in the 19th century?] that cross?cultural comparisons were simultaneously cross?historical. So-called primitive societies were taken as evidence about early stages of history for all human groups.?

This is a reference to the views, not so much of anthropologists (who were always divided), as of Hegel, Marx and Engels and their successors, the communists of today, who have an explicit, scientific, philosophical and historical theory of development, which is always human development.

Note that the first line of the Communist Manifesto, after the preamble, is: ?The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles,? to which Frederick Engels, in the 1888 edition, added: ?That is, all written history.? Engels proceeds to refer to his work ?The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State.?

This view of development is not actually ?19th century? but is at base simply humanist, and as such, it is as old as recorded history, as much as reactionary, anti-humanist ideas have always and up to the present time, been part of the same history.

Cole mentions some of the more recent anti-humanist ideologies such as the ?post-modernism? that attacks all (what they call) ?master narratives? (also, elsewhere, referred to as ?grand narratives?). Cole claims to be prepared to be inconclusive about this, but we in our course will not be content to leave the matter like that.

For one reason, theories of ?diversity? are not easily distinguished from theories of racialism. For that reason alone, in South Africa, the option for humanism is not in doubt from the point of view of the liberation movement.

This brings us close to the heart of the question of education: Whether it has a moral content or not? And whether it can be revolutionary, or not?

We will proceed, during this part 3 of our course, after reading Cole, to touch on Hegel, and on the way in which a conscious morality can be conceived of as integral to the theory of human development, and consequently, of education, and therefore, of schooling.

Cole?s reservations do not prevent him from making a firm distinction between the pre-historic societies wherein education is indistinguishable from life in general, and what he refers to as the ?sea change? of civilization, starting in the Middle East, when schooling becomes a separate institution, and very clearly an instrument of class-division that elevates the ruling class, while subordinating the exploited classes.

From this base Cole proceeds, in our second division of his essay, to ?Consequences of Schooling in Post?Colonial Societies?. We will take this as the next item of this week?s part of the course. Suffice it to note at this point that Professor Cole, based at the University of California in San Diego, appears compelled to discuss education as a whole in terms of the problems of Imperialism, in what he refers to as ?Post?Colonial Societies?.

And indeed the problems of Imperialism and of education cannot be separated from the general human struggle for freedom.

Indian E - commerce Scene To Rise Exponentially; Suggest A ...

Indian Ecommerce scene has been growing by leaps and bounds. A recent study by Google India supplements the fact that online shopping is going great guns in the Indian context. As an overview, the Indian market that exists on the internet saw a lot of big players entering it when the e-revolution hit it. ?Since then, a lot of Indian companies have set up businesses online and have served customers which are increasingly becoming comfortable with spending online. This augments the convenience of shopping and relaxes the prices. Less imports and more variety leads to increased customer satisfaction. ?As an example ?the kindle fire from Amazon is recently released in India and it has seen tremendous market response, as compared to the version that was imported form abroad.

The aforementioned study was carried out concerning product categories like books, beauty products, apparels, consumer electronics among a lot more. The participating agencies were Google search related data from 2011 and 2012 and TNS australia which conducted an online research which led to consolidation of data.

The study also undertook demographic studies which segregated the E-commerce?customers in to different age groups from 18 to 50 years of age from cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad & Pune. This is a relevant study as far as Indian?e-commerce?websites are concerned because there are a lot of website that do not ship to? a particular part of the country. This would also serve as a supplemented market study for businesses that are looking to expand.

Smartphone revolution has been partly responsible for this rise in E-commerce?scenario. Owners of smartphone devices have internet at the tip of their fingers. As mobile internet user base grows in India, mobile phones are also becoming a contributor in the surge for online shopping with Google witnessing 2X growth in number of queries from mobile phones in the year 2011 to 2012.

The report was compiled by combining data from Google Trends and online research conducted by TNS Australia with a sample size of 800 respondents on behalf of Google India in November 2012. One important part of the whole report is the study of specific niches created by some companies. Niche categories like baby products, home & furnishings and healthcare emerge as the fastest growing categories on Google search. Indian internet scene is going to grow as Google sets up its Asia servers and internet speeds rise in the subcontinent. The experience of shopping online is one that is lucrative and comforting.

With website beginning to be flexible and putting incredible amount of features at the foray, the customer is bound to be attracted to online shopping.

Hospital that trashed kidney resumes transplants

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) ? An Ohio hospital where a nurse accidentally threw out a viable kidney has resumed its kidney transplant program.

The University Toledo Medical Center had voluntarily suspended the transplant program after the Aug. 10 accident. After an investigation and policy changes, the hospital announced last month it was ready to resume the living-donor program.

Hospital spokesman Jon Strunk told The (Toledo) Blade (http://bit.ly/XakoLw ) that the first surgery took place Thursday. He declined to provide patient information.

A report by a surgeon hired by the hospital to review its transplant program called it "baffling" that the nurse would accidentally put the viable kidney with medical waste. But he found no problems with the systems that would have indicated the hospital was at risk for such a mistake.

    Crucial, long-overdue BlackBerry makeover arrives

TORONTO (AP) ? The maker of the BlackBerry smartphone is promising a speedy browser, a superb typing experience and the ability to keep work and personal identities separate on the same phone, the fruit of a crucial, long-overdue makeover for the Canadian company.

Thorsten Heins, chief executive of Research In Motion Ltd., will reveal the first phone with the new BlackBerry 10 system in New York on Wednesday. It will come with a marketing campaign that includes a Super Bowl ad. Repeated delays have left the once-pioneering BlackBerry an afterthought in the shadow of Apple's trend-setting iPhone and Google's Android-driven devices.

Now, there's some optimism. Previews of the software have gotten favorable reviews on blogs. Financial analysts are starting to see some slight room for a comeback. RIM's stock has nearly tripled to about $16.30 from a nine-year low in September, though it's still nearly 90 percent below its 2008 peak of $147.

Most analysts consider a BlackBerry 10 success to be crucial for the company's long-term viability.

"The old models are becoming obsolete quickly," BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis said. "There is still a big user base but it's going to rotate off. The question is: Where do they rotate to?"

The BlackBerry, pioneered in 1999, has been the dominant smartphone for on-the-go business people. Corporate information-technology managers like the phones because they're relatively secure and easy to manage.

The BlackBerry has also crossed over to consumers. President Barack Obama couldn't bear to part with it when he took office. Oprah Winfrey declared it one of her "favorite things." People got so addicted that the device was nicknamed "the CrackBerry."

But when the iPhone came out in 2007, it showed that phones can do much more than email and phone calls. They can play games, music and movies. Android came along to offer even more choices. Though IT managers still love BlackBerrys, employees were bringing their own devices to the workplace ? a trend Heins acknowledged RIM was slow to adapt to.

    Suddenly, the BlackBerry looked ancient.

Even as BlackBerry sales continued to grow in many parts of the world, many BlackBerry users in North America switched to iPhones and Android devices. BlackBerry's worldwide subscriber based peaked at 80 million in the quarter that ended Sept. 1, before dropping to 79 million in the most-recent quarter. In the U.S., according to research firm IDC, shipments of BlackBerry phones plummeted from 46 percent of the market in 2008 to 2 percent in 2012.

RIM promised a new system to catch up, using technology it got through its 2010 purchase of QNX Software Systems. RIM initially said BlackBerry 10 would come by early 2012, but then the company changed that to late 2012. A few months later, that date was pushed further, to early 2013, missing the lucrative holiday season. The holdup helped wipe out more than $70 billion in shareholder wealth and 5,000 jobs.

Although executives have been providing a glimpse at some of BlackBerry 10's new features for months, Heins will finally showcase a complete system at Wednesday's event. Devices will go on sale soon after that.

RIM redesigned the system to embrace the multimedia, apps and touch-screen experience prevalent today.

"Historically there have been areas that have not been our strongest points," Rick Costanzo, RIM's executive vice president of global sales, said in an interview. "Not only have we caught up, but we may even be better than some of the competition now."

Costanzo said "no one else can touch" what RIM's new system offers.

The new operating system promises better multitasking than either the iPhone or Android. Simply swipe a finger across the phone's display screen to switch to another program.

All emails and notifications from such applications as Twitter and Facebook go to the BlackBerry Hub, a nerve center accessible with a finger swipe even if you have another application open. One can peek into it and open an email, or return to the previous application without opening the email.

"You are not going in and out of applications; you're flowing through applications with one simple gesture of your finger," Costanzo said. "You can leave applications running. You can effortlessly flow between them. So that's completely unique to us."

That said, multitasking will be limited and won't allow for extensive use of apps side by side, as is typically permitted on traditional computers. If you're watching a video, it will still run while you check for email. But it will pause if you decide to open an email and resume when you are done.

The BlackBerry's touch-screen keyboard promises to learn a user's writing style and suggest words and phrases to complete, going beyond typo corrections offered by rivals. See the one you want, and flick it up to the message area. Costanzo said that "BlackBerry offers the best keyboard, period."

Gus Papageorgiou, a Scotiabank financial analyst who has tried it out, agreed with that assessment and said the keyboard even learns and adjusts to your thumb placements.

The first BlackBerry 10 phone will have only a touch screen. RIM has said it will release a version with a physical keyboard soon after that. That's an area RIM has excelled at, and it's one reason many BlackBerry users have remained loyal despite temptations to switch.

Another distinguishing feature will be the BlackBerry Balance, which allows two personas on the same device. Businesses can keep their data secure without forcing employees to get a second device for personal use. For instance, IT managers can prevent personal apps from running inside corporate firewalls, but those managers won't have access to personal data on the device.

With Balance, "you can just switch from work to personal mode," Papageorgiou said. "I think that is something that will attract a lot of people."

RIM is also claiming that the BlackBerry 10's browser will be speedy, even faster than browsers for laptop and desktop computers. According to Papageorgiou, early, independent tests between the BlackBerry 10 and the iPhone support that claim.

Regardless of BlackBerry 10's advances, though, the new system will face a key shortcoming: It won't have as many apps written by outside companies and individuals as the iPhone and Android. RIM has said it plans to launch BlackBerry 10 with more than 70,000 apps, including those developed for RIM's PlayBook tablet, first released in 2011. Even so, that's just a tenth of what the iPhone and Android offer. Papageorgiou said the initial group will include the most popular ones such as Twitter and Facebook. But RIM will have to persuade others to make a BlackBerry version, when they are already struggling to keep up with both the iPhone and Android.

Like many analysts, Papageorgiou recently upgraded RIM's stock, but cautions that longtime BlackBerry users will have to get used to a whole new operating system.

He said RIM can be successful if about a third of current subscribers upgrade and if the company can get 4 million new users overseas, especially in countries where the BlackBerry has remained popular. IDC said smartphone shipments grew 44 percent in 2012. If those trends continue, it will be possible for the BlackBerry to grow even if iPhone and Android users don't switch.

"This doesn't have to be the best smartphone on the planet to be a success for RIM," he said. "I think the big question though is, if it fails, is it just too late? Are the other two ecosystems just so advanced that no one can catch up? That's a big risk."

Futurity.org ? China's indoor air raises cancer risk for women

Increased lung cancer risk among women was strongly attributed to the fine particles produced by coal combustion for heating and cooking, and from passive smoking. Kitchen ventilation systems, such as fans, are not common in China and people are reluctant to open windows because they want to keep heat in and pollution out. (Credit: Edwin Lee/Flickr)

    U. BUFFALO (US) ? Breathing indoor air in some Chinese cities carries significant cancer risks, especially for women, new research shows.

While around 60 percent of Chinese men smoke, only about 4 percent of women in China smoke, however women?s rates of lung cancer are among the highest in the world?about 21 cases per 100,000.

Indoor air pollution generates levels of fine particulate matter that are at least double the maximum considered acceptable by World Health Organization guidelines, according to the study published in the journal Cancer Causes and Control. The study is the first to measure particulate matter (PM) levels inside the home and to link it with the incidence of lung cancer in Chinese women.

?Our results show that besides smoking, indoor air pollution contributes significantly to women?s lung cancer risk in China,? says lead author Lina Mu, assistant professor of social and preventive medicine in the School of Public Health and Health Professions at the University at Buffalo. ?That?s why we wanted to find out how much indoor air pollution contributes to lung cancer risk among Chinese women. It has been suspected but not measured.?

Since women tend to be home for longer periods of time and to cook more frequently, housing-related exposure is more of a factor among women than men.

The case-control study includes 429 Chinese women:?197 who had lung cancer and 232 who were controls. Of the 197 with lung cancer, 164 were nonsmokers while there were 218 nonsmokers in the control group. The study was conducted in Taiyuan city, one of the top 10 air polluted cities in the world according to Asian Development Bank?s 2012 annual report. Taiyuan is a large industrial city in northern China, which is home to heavy industry, including steel, coal mining, and processing and electronics plants.

Among the nonsmokers, lung cancer was strongly associated with multiple sources of indoor air pollution, including exposure to tobacco smoke at work, frequent cooking, and the use of solid fuel, primarily coal, for cooking and heating.

A particle mass monitor was used to measure PM levels inside the homes?mostly apartments?of study participants.

?We found that the smallest type of particulate matter is the type associated with the higher risk of lung cancer among nonsmoking Chinese women,? Mu says.? ?For every additional ten micrograms per square meter of fine particular matter, there is an associated 45 percent increased risk of lung cancer.?

Increased lung cancer risk among women was strongly attributed to the fine particles produced by coal combustion for heating and cooking, and from passive smoking. Kitchen ventilation systems, such as fans, are not common in China and people are reluctant to open windows because they want to keep heat in and pollution out.

Also, hot oil, a staple in traditional Chinese stir-frying and deep-frying, produces carcinogens, and is a key contributor.

?Women are at high risk because they are exposed to solid fuel emissions from heating and cooking as well as from passive smoking,? she says, adding that smoking is a key social ingredient in China. ?Men tend to gather and smoke together, often in small, enclosed spaces, especially in offices.?

While in large cities, some restaurants have begun to segregate smokers, people smoke freely in most public places in China. Improvements will depend on significant changes, including a switch to clean energy sources, the installation of better ventilation systems, and public education about the benefits of keeping windows open and curbing passive smoking.

Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles, Fudan University, the Taiyuan City Center for Disease Control and Prevention,? and Shanxi Tumor Hospital contributed to the study that was funded by the National Nature Science Foundation of China, the National Institutes of Health, and the Alper Research Center for Environmental Genomics at UCLA.

(AP) ? Taylor Swift has been turning heads with her new, sexy wardrobe, but the 23-year-old says it's just a reflection of getting older.

Swift has people buzzing about her recent red carpet choices, which have included plunging necklines and shorter skirts. "As far as wardrobe, we have been operating from a different place," Swift said.

While her choices may be demure compared with the Kim Kardashians of the world, for Swift, a former teen sweetheart, it's raised eyebrows, and she acknowledges that it's been a bit of a shock for some people who are accustomed to seeing her wear long dresses. She recalled how her decision to wear shorts at last year's MTV Video Music Awards caused a stir.

"It was like, 'Gasp, Taylor wears shorts.' And I thought it was hilarious," she said, adding: "I'm not going to be like taking my clothes off or that sort of thing."

Swift's new look is a reflection of her overall maturation, with her latest album, "Red," selling more than 3 million copies since it was released last fall and producing two smash singles, "I Knew You Were Trouble" and "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," which is nominated for record of the year at next month's Grammy Awards.

"I'm so happy about (my) three nominations ? it's so unreal," Swift said in a phone interview Monday from Paris.

Swift said she's especially happy with the success of songs like "I Knew You Were Trouble," a dance-infused song that takes her further from her country realm than ever before.

"The fans have been so good to me this year," she said. "I wanted to make a genre-defying record, I wanted to make an album that was hard to pin down, and hard to box in."

Swift said fans should expect more surprises during her upcoming tour, which kicks off March 13 in Omaha, Neb. She's partnering with Diet Coke for the tour, and she's signed on to be a pitchwoman for the beverage.

While a recent op-ed piece in The New York Times questioned whether pop stars should be endorsing soft drinks with society's push toward a healthier lifestyle, Swift, who noted she's become more health-conscious, said the beverage is part of her life.

"I think my lifestyle plays a part into what I choose to endorse," Swift said. "Diet Coke is something that is a part of my life. ... Also a part of my life is exercise."

Her partnership with the soft drink company includes the use of social media platforms to connect with fans, something that Swift, an avid Tweeter and presence on Instagram, already uses on her own.

(AP) ? Two European science projects ? one to map the intricacies of the human brain, the other to explore the extraordinary carbon-based material graphene ? won an EU technology contest Monday, getting up to ?1 billion ($1.34 billion) each over the next decade.

The projects were selected from 26 proposals.

"European's position as a knowledge superpower depends on thinking the unthinkable and exploiting the best ideas," European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes said in a statement. "This multi-billion competition rewards home-grown scientific breakthroughs and shows that when we are ambitious we can develop the best research in Europe."

The Human Brain Project will use supercomputers 1,000 times more powerful than those today to create the most detailed model ever of the human brain. Then the project plans to simulate the effects of drugs and treatments on the brain, for a better understanding of neurological diseases and related ailments.

In addition, the increased knowledge about how the brain works ? and how it manages billions of processing units and trillions of synapses while consuming no more power than a light bulb ?may lead to "a paradigm shift for computing," the European Commission, the European Union's executive branch, said in a statement.

"The economic and industrial impact of such a shift is potentially enormous," the commission said.

The leader of the project, Henry Markram, a professor of neuroscience at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale of Lausanne in Switzerland, said earlier this month that it could not be undertaken without this kind of funding.

"The pharmaceutical industry won't do this, computing companies won't do this ? there's too much fundamental science," Markram said. "This is one project which absolutely needs public funding."

The other project will investigate the possible uses of graphene, the thinnest known material, which conducts electricity far better than copper, is perhaps 300 times stronger than steel and has unique optical properties. A sheet of it is one atom thick; scientists call it the first known two-dimensional material.

Important future uses include the development of fast, flexible and strong consumer electronics, bendable personal communication devises, lighter airplanes, cars that use less energy and artificial retinas.

The project will be led by professor Jari Kinaret of the Chalmers University of Technology in Goteborg, Sweden.

"The story of graphene shows there is still wonder in science," Kroes said Monday at a news conference. "It's like a miracle."

In 2010, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to two scientists at the University of Manchester in Britain "for groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene."

"So, you've heard of Silicon Valley," Kroes said. "'Where in Europe wants to be known as 'Graphene Valley?' That's the billion-euro question I am putting to you today."

Each of the projects will initially receive ?54 million ($73 million) from the European Union's research budget, an amount that will be matched by national governments and other sources. Further funding will depend on whether they reach certain milestones within the first 30 months, but over a decade it could total ?1 billion ($1.34 million) each.

In this age of government austerity, the commission promised to monitor the projects carefully so they continue "to be an efficient use of taxpayers' money."

The winners were selected by a panel of 25 experts, including professors, scientists and Nobel winners.

(AP) ? Egypt's army chief warned Tuesday of the "the collapse of the state" if the political crisis roiling the nation for nearly a week continues.

The warning by Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who is also defense minister, were the first comments by the powerful military since the country's latest crisis began last week around the second anniversary of Egypt's uprising. They came days after President Mohammed Morsi ordered the army to restore order in the Suez Canal cities of Port Said and Suez ? two of three cities now under a 30-day state of emergency and night curfew.

The attempts by Morsi to stem a wave of political violence appear to have made no headway as the country sinks deeper into chaos and lawlessness. So far, nearly 60 people have been killed in five days of unrest.

"The continuation of the conflict between the different political forces and their differences over how the country should be run could lead to the collapse of the state and threaten future generations," el-Sissi said in an address to military academy cadets. His comments were posted on the armed forces' official Facebook page.

On Sunday night, Morsi slapped a monthlong state of emergency and a night curfew on Port Said, Suez and Ismailiya, another city on the Suez canal.

Nevertheless, troops stood by and watched Monday night as thousands took to the streets chanting against Morsi in all three cities in direct defiance of the curfew just as it came into force for the first night at 9 p.m. The display of contempt for the president's decision was tantamount to an outright rebellion that many worried could spread.

Some of the demonstrators in Port Said waved white-and-green flags they said were the colors of a "new and independent state" in the city. Such a secession would be unthinkable in Egypt, but the move underlined the depth of frustration in the strategic city on the Mediterranean coast at the northern tip of the Suez Canal.

El-Sissi, who was named defense minister in August, acknowledged the difficult challenges facing his troops in the cities where they deployed.

"The deployment of the armed forces poses a grave predicament for us insofar as how we balance avoiding confrontations with Egyptian citizens, their right to protest and the protection and security of vital facilities that impact Egypt's national security," he said.

Morsi is the first freely elected president in Egypt. But since coming to office nearly seven months ago, he has failed to tackle the country's massive political, social and economic problems ranging from an economy in free fall to surging crime, chaos on the streets and lack of political consensus.

The wave of unrest has touched cities across the country since Thursday, including Cairo, the three Suez Canal cities, Alexandria on the Mediterranean in the north and a string of cities in the Nile Delta.

The violence first erupted Thursday and accelerated Friday when protests marking the two-year anniversary of the 2001 uprising turned to clashes around the country that left 11 dead, most of them in Suez.

The next day, riots exploded in Port Said after a court convicted and sentenced to death 21 defendants ? mostly locals ? for a mass soccer riot in the city's main stadium a year ago. Rioters attacked police stations, clashed with security forces in the streets and shots and tear gas were fired at protester funerals in mayhem that left 44 people dead over the weekend.

Yahoo sees revenue climb this year, but long road ahead

(Reuters) - Yahoo Inc forecast a modest uptick in revenue for the current year as it revamps its family of websites but Chief Executive Marissa Mayer warned it would be a long journey to revive the Internet company's fortunes.

In Yahoo's first financial outlook since Mayer became CEO in July, the company outlined a plan to trigger a "chain reaction of growth" by overhauling a dozen of its online services to increase the amount of time users spent on its websites.

It also pointed to strength in its search advertising business and progress made in improving its internal operations.

Yahoo's shares were 3 percent higher in after hours trade after the revenue projection was disclosed during an analysts conference call, shedding some ground after earlier rising as much as 4.5 percent.

But weakness in Yahoo's display ad business, which accounts for roughly 40 percent of the company's total revenue, caught some analysts by surprise.

"While the road to growth is certain, it will not be immediate," said Mayer, a former Google Inc executive and Yahoo's third full-time CEO since September 2011.

Yahoo said that revenue, excluding fees it pays to partner websites, will range between $4.5 billion and $4.6 billion in 2013, implying an annual growth rate of 0.7 percent to 3 percent.

Finance Chief Ken Goldman also warned investors to expect "an investment phase" in the first half of the year, which he said would impact profit margins.

"What was clear from the call is that this is a long-term turnaround story," said Macquarie Research analyst Ben Schachter. "We shouldn't expect anything to just snap back and correct itself."

During the fourth quarter, Yahoo's net revenue increased 4 percent year-on-year to $1.22 billion, as search advertising sales offset a 10 percent decline in the number of display ads sold on Yahoo's core properties.

Mayer said the decline was the result of less activity by visitors to its popular websites, such as its Web email service, and to a lesser extent due to users accessing the Web on smartphones, where Yahoo's ad business is not as strong.

Efforts to revamp its mobile properties, begun last year with a redesign of the photo-sharing service Flickr, remain on track, said Mayer, noting that Yahoo now has 200 million monthly mobile users.

"From a monetization perspective this is still a very nascent source of revenue for us. With any platform shift, revenue always followed users and mobile will be no different," she said.

Mayer took over after a tumultuous period at Yahoo in which former CEO Scott Thompson resigned after less than 6 months on the job over a controversy about his academic credentials and in which Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang resigned from the board and cut his ties with the company.

Yahoo's stock has risen roughly 30 percent since Mayer took the helm, reaching its highest levels since 2008.

Part of the stock's rise has been driven by significant stock buybacks, using proceeds from a $7.6 billion deal to sell half of its 40 percent stake in Chinese Internet company Alibaba Group, said Sameet Sinha, an analyst with B. Riley Caris.

Yahoo said it repurchased $1.5 billion worth of shares during the fourth quarter.

The company's fourth-quarter net income was $272.3 million, or 23 cents per share, versus $295.6 million, or 24 cents per share in the year-ago period.

Excluding certain items, Yahoo said it had earnings per share of 32 cents, versus the average analyst expectation of 28 cents according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

For the first quarter, Yahoo said it expects revenue, excluding partner website fees, of $1.07 billion to $1.1 billion, trailing the $1.1 billion that Wall Street analysts expect on average.

Shares of Yahoo were up 59 cents at $20.90 in after-hours trading on Monday.

The European Commission has officially announced the selection of the Human Brain Project (HBP) as one of its two FET Flagship projects. The new project will federate European efforts to address one of the greatest challenges of modern science: understanding the human brain.

The goal of the Human Brain Project is to pull together all our existing knowledge about the human brain and to reconstruct the brain, piece by piece, in supercomputer-based models and simulations. The models offer the prospect of a new understanding of the human brain and its diseases and of completely new computing and robotic technologies. On January 28, the European Commission supported this vision, announcing that it has selected the HBP as one of two projects to be funded through the new FET Flagship Program.

Federating more than 80 European and international research institutions, the Human Brain Project is planned to last ten years (2013-2023). The cost is estimated at 1.19 billion euros. The project will also associate some important North American and Japanese partners. It will be coordinated at the Ecole Polytechnique Fdrale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, by neuroscientist Henry Markram with co-directors Karlheinz Meier of Heidelberg University, Germany, and Richard Frackowiak of Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV) and the University of Lausanne (UNIL).

Canada's role in this international project is through Dr. Alan Evans of the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) at McGill University. His group has developed a high-performance computational platform for neuroscience (CBRAIN) and multi-site databasing technologies that will be used to assemble brain imaging data across the HBP. He is also collaborating with European scientists on the creation of ultra high-resolution 3D brain maps. This ambitious project will integrate data across all scales, from molecules to whole-brain organization. It will have profound implications for our understanding of brain development in children and normal brain function, as well as for combatting brain disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease, said Dr. Evans. "The MNI's pioneering work on brain imaging technology has led to significant advances in our understanding of the brain and neurological disorders," says Dr. Guy Rouleau, Director of the MNI. "I am proud that our expertise is a key contributor to this international program focused on improving quality of life worldwide."

"The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is delighted to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of Dr. Evans and his team. Their work on the CBRAIN infrastructure and this leading-edge HBP will allow the integration of Canadian neuroscientists into an eventual global brain project," said Dr. Anthony Phillips, Scientific Director for the CIHR Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction. "Congratulations to the Canadian and European researchers who will be working collaboratively towards the same goal which is to provide insights into neuroscience that will ultimately improve people's health."

"From mapping the sensory and motor cortices of the brain to pioneering work on the mechanisms of memory, McGill University has long been synonymous with world-class neuroscience research," says Dr. Rose Goldstein, Vice-Principal (Research and International Relations). "The research of Dr. Evans and his team marks an exciting new chapter in our collective pursuit to unlock the potential of the human brain and the entire nervous system a critical step that would not be possible without the generous support of the European Commission and the FET Flagship Program."

The selection of the Human Brain Project as a FET Flagship is the result of more than three years of preparation and a rigorous and severe evaluation by a large panel of independent, high profile scientists, chosen by the European Commission. In the coming months, the partners will negotiate a detailed agreement with the Community for the initial first two and a half year ramp-up phase (2013-mid 2016). The project will begin work in the closing months of 2013.

Russell Wilson tosses three touchdowns for the NFC, while A.J. Green caught three scores for the AFC.

HONOLULU - A handful of shenanigans and plenty of points - yet still another ho-hum Pro Bowl.

Whether the NFL's all-star game will return next season is a something the league will ponder the next few months after the NFC's 62-35 blowout of the AFC on Sunday.

"It's been an unbelievable week," Seattle rookie quarterback Russell Wilson said, "And the thing was, if you watched us, everybody was competing today and it was really awesome."

Wilson at least got the crowd pumped up in the second half with some nifty scrambles and three passing touchdowns. There was also Houston's sack-happy defensive end J.J. Watt going out for a couple of passes as a wide receiver, and retiring Green Bay center Jeff Saturday snapping to two Mannings on opposite teams.

But while the NFC appeared unstoppable on offense, with nearly each player putting up fantasy-worthy lines in limited play, the AFC had five turnovers and scored most of its points well after the game was no longer competitive.

Minnesota tight end Kyle Rudolph was voted the game's MVP with five catches for 122 yards and a touchdown.

"Guys were competing, guys wanted to win and guys want to keep the game here," Rudolph insisted. "That was the point before the game. We want to keep this game rolling for future Pro Bowlers."

Watt, who had 20 1/2 sacks for Houston, lined up as a wide receiver on the AFC's third play from scrimmage, but missed a pass from Denver quarterback Peyton Manning. He was targeted one more time, but didn't make a catch.

He later showed a television camera a bloody left pinkie, joking with NBC broadcasters that it was proof that the players were trying.

"Hey, Commish, we're playing hard," Watt said as he showed his finger.

Roger Goodell has said the Pro Bowl won't be played again if play didn't improve this year. Last year, fans in Hawaii booed as lineman were clearly not trying. On one play in that game, Minnesota defensive end Jared Allen did a barrel roll to switch positions with a teammate.

If players were coasting this time around, it was less obvious. The AFC just played poorly. And fans didn't boo much - the stands were relatively empty even though the game sold enough tickets to lift a local television blackout.

The game was trending on Twitter in the United States early on, but quickly gave way to the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the WWE Royal Rumble.

Saturday, retiring at the end of this season, played for both teams, though he came representing the NFC. He lined up on one play for the AFC to snap the ball one last time to Manning, his longtime former Colts teammate.

Saturday said it meant a lot to him that the Broncos quarterback, whom Saturday called a true friend, orchestrated the stunt.

"He's got a little more pull than I got," Saturday said. "He got it all set up and timed up for me, so it was really nice of him to do that."

Saturday played 13 seasons in Indianapolis, all with Manning - except 2011, when Manning was out with a neck injury. Saturday then played later in the game for the NFC, snapping to Peyton's brother, Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

Saturday's last play on the field was a passing touchdown by Eli Manning.

Peyton Manning said it was nice for the NFL to allow the play to happen.

"It's something that I'll always remember," he said, "that he'll always remember to kind of get that one, final snap together after the thousands that we've taken together."

Even as the NFC piled up touchdowns, the game struggled for memorable moments after Saturday's momentary switch.

In the second quarter, referee Ed Hochuli drew cheers when announcing a pass interference penalty on Denver cornerback Champ Bailey in the second quarter - the first flag of the game.

"Yes, there are penalties in the Pro Bowl," Hochuli said, drawing laughs and loud cheers.

Giants wideout Victor Cruz broke a Pro Bowl record with 10 catches. Tampa Bay receiver Vincent Jackson had 91 yards and two touchdowns. Eli Manning threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

Cincinnati's A.J. Green had three TD catches for the AFC.

NFL officials said earlier in the week that the league wants to decide the future of the Pro Bowl by the time next season's schedule is released in April.

"We understood exactly what (Goodell) wanted, guys were making plays all over the field," Cruz said. "There was a little bit more high intensity than in years past and we were excited to play."

    The importance of app icons

Renowned icon and app designer Louie Mantia -- who's been a guest on our design show, Iterate, not once but twice -- has shared his thoughts on app icons and their importance in an article on mantia.com:

[While] you can focus on marketing needs, that is a one-time scenario for each person. Any individual will only buy your app once. One time. It?s important to recognize that optimizing for this one situation may hinder the needs of your everyday user.

I believe good app icons are most valuable for your customers, your everyday users, not first-time shoppers.

Mantia shows a lot of examples, and even some brilliantly redesign suggestions for industry titans. Check it out.
