Indiana Military Museum - Part One

A Knox County judge has taken a boyhood interest and turned it into a phenomenon that's drawing national attention.

Tom McClanahan tells you more about the Indiana Military Museum.

Tom reports, "In fact, this is not the first time I've reported on the Indiana Military Museum. I did a report with Jim Osborne nearly 13 years ago at the orginal site north of town. The actual museum started in the early 80's but the idea behind it was hatched long before that when Jim was a boy and his father brought home a Civil War musket.

Jim says, "And then the next door neighbor, who was a veteran of World War Two, was on his way out to the trash pit with a German helmet and a flag and a canteen, various things like that he'd brought back from the war and he looked at me and handed them to me instead of throwing them in the trash, so I became an early pack rat for military history items."

Pack rat is an understatement! There has been a huge amount of work to get the museum to where it is today. A real break came when the Museum bought the property of the old Blackford Glass Factory near 6th and Willow Streets. One of the buildings has been renovated to house many of the exhibits. The 14 acres is adjacent to the grounds of the George Rogers Clark Memorial and the site of the annual Rendezvous where battle re-enactments take place. This museum has it's own re-enactments on site with enough room to accommodate a large crowd.

The Museum is now the home of an actual plane that was used in combat, a rare find.

Jim says, "One of our latest big acquisitions was a B-26 bomber from World War II. We acquired that up in Rockford, IL from a private owner a year and a half, two years ago and had the tenacity to go after it, go up there, get it, take it apart, bring it here, put it back together, you've got be willing to do those things and we were."

Which sums up how most of the memorabilia ended up here and some of it is very, very, interesting. We'll show you just a sample in the second part of Indiana's Military Museum.

A grand opening banquet is set for late May for the Museum. Guest speakers will include a direct relative of General George Patton.
